DUNU DN-2000J -- More Than Evolution?

Could you elaborate on this midrange "bite" you speak of? im not familiar with the TWFK character in this regard. Also you mention poor instrument separation. Do you mean worse than a DN1k or 2k or no better? Are the "bite" or soundstage affecting the separation?

"bite" as in the attack of each note is too quick. the leading edge is razor sharp. it can come off as a little unnatural to people used to dynamic driver IEMs.

"Poor" instrument separation is only relative to good CIEMs. Separation is great amongst universals. It has more to do with acoustic phase linearity than anything else.

I think you'll find the 2000J almost everything you wished were improved on the 2000 except with slightly harsher treble and miniscule more amount of sibilance.

Thanks Tom,

When you say the mid-range is more revealing on 2000J is it an obvious 'omg that's totally different' or.. 'I think it does if I listen closely' ?

Hmm...the way you talk about these relative to other TOTL universals sounds like the way AverageJoe has talked about the PerfectSeal Fusion 11 compared to TOTL customs...I guess I have a decision to make.

(I was going to save up for the Fusion 11, but considering the 2000J is going to be cheaper and won't require ear impressions, it seems mighty tempting.)

Does the "bite" amount to a nice crunch with guitars/rock music like a Grado kind of attack? Also how thick/tall is the low to mid range, do vibrations in bass guitars resonate well?

I'm going to take a point off the left photo, Tom. If you zoom in there's a hair on the right earpiece tip. (serious)  Not really excusable.

Guilty as charged...

Is there substantial driver flex for most DN-2000s? The ones I've tried have all had driver flex. Interestingly, the driver flexes a lot less on the DN-2000J, only when sealing really deep (to the point of pain against the ear canal's ext. acoustic meatus).

If I insert DN-2000 normally driver flex doesn't occur with this pair.

If I keep pushing to the point of pain and squish them around like a plunger then yes I can make them do so.

This is the beauty loaning IEM from people, I can torture them with no consequences.

Is there a photo of both dn2000 and dn2000j side by side, because to me I can't really see much difference in size

There isn't much of a difference... http://www.head-fi.org/t/755301/lightbox/post/11328345/id/1304263

Elaboration: In person, people can tell the 2000J is smaller, but functionally, it's not really a big difference. A tiny bit more comfortable, yes, but not by a lot.
