DT880 vs HD600
Jul 13, 2014 at 6:05 AM Post #17 of 22
My roommate had a pair of dt880s 250ohm and my good bud had hd600s so I've become quite familiar with their sounds. Overall, I'd say that the hd600s beat the dt880s in almost every way (especially when amp'ed well). The neutrality of the hd600s is great and if you get a nice tube amp like the bottlehead crack, it'll sounds absolutely blissful.

I'm familiar with both also, and the 600 is not neutral. It might be balanced, in terms of no part of the FR predominating, but it's not neutral. I sold both 600 and, later, 650 in favour of the 880 Pro, which I consider superior to both for classical/orchestral. I have no opinion on their suitability for other types of music.

hd600 more neutral than dt880?  don't think so.   DT880 are one of the most flat sound signatures there is.....much like the triplefi 10 IEMs...  They are super flat, which is why I like them. The sound is not coloured at all...

Looking to get another pair of the DT880 250 or 600ohm asap.

DT880 has a well documented and measured peak at 8khz, so its not flat or neutral, on the other hand, the HD600 has a peak at 3.5khz-4khz, and a bass hump, then a huge roll off below 40 hz, so its not neutral either.
Overall though, I prefer the HD600..The DT800 has better bass extension, but was too bright, dry, and very slightly metallic sounding, imho.

could you say that the hd600 is more fun?  Which is better for vocals?  I'm guessing DT880 is better for EDM.  i kinda want a fully open headphone instead of the semi-open dt-880

If you're asking about fun then it would be like 600 vs 990 that would be the better question. I don't know about the 600 vs the 990 for EDM, but i do know about the 880 vs 990 for EDM, and 990 wins. And 990 vs 770 for EDM, 770.80 wins. But IMO the xb1000 is best for EDM, and maybe the JVC sz. Its possible they are beat out by z1R/th900 as some claim, but i've never been able to do a head to head with all 4. I would hope they do for the prices they command!

If you listen to jazz, folk, blues, alternative rock, classical, then you go to an open hifi can. EDM to me anyway or psytrance, hip hop etc is always best on closed, heavy bass cans. Open cans just don't do it, though probably will be better for the bits with vocals.
