DT880 vs HD600 for classical music.

I like the DT880s but I think for classical the HD600s will be better. I listened to the HD600 very briefly and it doesn't seem to have the sparkling highs but is a bit more neutral.
With that said I need to get myself some HD600s to really A/B them.

the only way to really know which is best, is to try for yourself. I don't know what you're used to with other headphones/hifi, but both should be very good in their own ways. (I love my HD650 with the classical music I listen, mostly rachmaninov/beethoven concerts)

I don't understand using the HD600's for classical, sorry. Compared to the DT880 Pro's they lack resolution, soundstage width, transparency, speed and tonal completness. They are not neutral, they lack a bit of harmonic content in the midrange. It's obvious in any good rig when comparing to the DT880's or the GS1000's. The latter just blew away the HD600's from my home I guess forever. The AKG K601's are significantly better to me than the HD600's as well but for opera they suck. Actually, I'd choose the HD650's over the HD600's for classical despite I don't accept these headphones with the stock cable due to muddy coloration.

It might also be interesting to know which of all people that recommend headphones, actually listens and knows something about classical music. Not pointing at anyone here.

The GS1000 is equalized a bit but at the same time it's: fast enough, resolving enough, harmonically complete enough. The HD600's are not. The equalization is always partly compensated by your brain after some time and it doesn't matter. You can also see the pulse response for 500Hz for the HD600's - most headphones like DT880, K701, even HD650 - have it better.

Not that I think I was pointed but starting around six, most music live performances I attended were opera, classical, acoustic and the like.

I heard the dt880, HD600 and the K702 and the K702 for my taste are the absolute winners. [so ofcourse i bought them after].
they have the largest and most accurate soundstage, they are very neutral and natural, great detail and it is very fun to listen to 'em. [sorry about my english]

I don't find the K-701 particularly accurate or fun.

For classical, I think the HD-600 is the best of the two you mentioned. The DT880 pulls back a little in the mids, while the HD-600 has better balance overall. The DT880 isn't bad, though. I'm listening to mine ('03) right now, but with a little electronica, which they're good at.

When I get into serious classical listening, I reach for the K-501, K-1000 and DT48. The K-501 is a great overall can for any subgenre and I use it for casual listening. The K-1000 comes out when I have the time, and quiet, for a detailed and focused listening session. The DT48 excels with smaller solo and chamber pieces. I'd give the best overall sound to the DT48, but the K-1000 might be slightly better for its amazing soundstage/presentation. Also, being closed, the DT48 doesn't quite get big orchestral stuff right, though everything is tonally accurate.

I believe Uncle Erik summarizes it well, especially with the slight mid reduction i the 880s. For large orchestral works, the 600s are great, and for smaller or more intimate pieces the 880s are very good. The 880s reproduce classical well, but the 600s soundstage and balance, to me, are just better for a broader range of classical music types.

Oh, and I wish I could have scored a 501, they seem to be growing in popularity compared to the current 601s and 701/702s.
