Ive prety much decided to go for one of these headphones, right now im leaning towards the dt880s. Im just looking for some quick input. I am not a basshead, I rather enjoy a clean sound, it still have some bass though. They should also be very comfortable as I'll be using them most of the time when im working at my computer.

Thanks

My planned roadmap first to build myself the "Starving Student" amp (partly also for the fun of it since im an EE student) and use that until christmas when i can get a better one. How good of an amp do you need to drive these headphones? Are we talking a 200$ amp or an 800$ amp?

well I dont mind getting a better amp later on, so I don't want to limit myself in that perspective, but I dont want one that needs a 1000$ amp. I dont listen that much to classical music. Another thing I'm really looking for is sound stage and apparently the dt880's are prety good in that perspective...

Anyone know anything about the thomann version of the dt880's (or if they are the same as the '03 version, they look the same at least: http://s4b.directupload.net/images/090618/dlw4tq8x.jpg)

They are defenitly 2003 edition.

As for the original question, from what I've read the D2000 have more bass than DT-880 and K701/K702. Some found the D2000 bass quite bloated and other consider it just fine. Personnally I would go with the DT-880 if you are not a bass freak but they need a dedicated headphone amp to sound their best. A 1k$ amps isn't necessary. Forget the AKG since a lot people complain about their lean bass.

From my personnal experience with my cans, I prefer the bass of my DT-880 '03 than my Grado RS-1. A bit slower than RS-1 but much more bass extension and punch that is easily noticed on bass drums.

(unless someone convinces me otherwise in the next 5 mins)

What you just said prety much sums up what i though from reading through reviews and other posts, it seems like they are the headphones that are best suited for me.

I find the K702's bass to be quite fine for my tastes and i like the music to have some bass to it as well but i am not a bass head. I have them running out of an apogee duet. They sound just fine to me, the bass is there very clean and deep. It is a very neutral sounding headphone. I really enjoy it. I was able to find them for $200 lightly used. I was thinking about the DT880 but i read the mids aren't as nice as the K701/702 and i listen to a bit of female vocals and other vocal music so that turned me off of the DT880's.

I own the dt880 and k701's. As an overall can, the dt880 (250ohm or better 600ohm) gets my recommendation. It is more forgiving and easier to drive well, the k701's need good amplification, its more comfortable for long listening sessions, does very good with all types of music as it is more a more involving less analytical can. The k701 shines on its soundstage and its a very good can for listening to high fidelity recordings, it likes jazz and similar, but the dt880 shines on everything!

In the future, try pairing them with tube amplification!

tomb: Even though it can drive a pair of K1000s, is the quality any good?

The DT880/2003 should suit your needs fine. I will add that they do better, IMHO, with tubes "somewhere" en route. I'm driving mine with the hybrid Bada PH-12, and have had very good success with the all-tube Darkvoice 336i. Tubes lend a warmth and vibrancy that rightly compliments the detailed and orderly signature of the DT880 in-and-of themselves. : )
