D2000 for modest amplification and sources. K701 for high end sources, amps and good classical recordings.

Just saw this thread, as I've had all 3 cans mentioned thought I'd chime in...

Mostly I just support other's comments that have owned these cans.

Nice to have both "fun" (D2000s) & "analytic" (DT880s or K70Xs) headphones depending on your tastes and I'm holding on to my DT880s (2003 ed) & D2000s, but doing a partial markl mod shortly to D2000s to tame their bass... It really needs doing, but nice that the bass is there to tame and seems doing so may make them "great" cans based on info around these parts.

Powering all these w/CTH but different tubes. D2000s @ work because need closed/low-leak cans there & DT880s @ home. Can't go wrong w/any these cans tho.

If you are willing to build your own, a $1000 will buy you a very strong tube amp. One that you won't have to upgrade for performance needs. Build one with at least a half watt of output power, premium power caps and point to point silver wire.

Regarding the starving student amp, the first thing that really surprised me about it was how powerful it is. With the exception of the K701 (which is known to be picky with amps), I think the SS will do fine with either the D2000 or DT880, as I have run Senns and a Beyer DT770 250 ohm just fine. The SS sounds pretty warm and will definitely make your cans sound more musical.
So basically,
Pros: surprisingly powerful and I really like the color/musicality it adds
Cons: not the most detailed, which can be good if you do not have the highest quality source, also I did not notice that big of improvements in soundstage, only slight

D2000 is quite different from the 701 and 880. It's a fun phone with relatively strong bass and has more coloration/smaller soundstage. I would personally choose the 880s if you have a warm-sounding amp/source (necessary to tame the slightly bright highs).
