DROP + GRELL OAE1

Jul 16, 2024 at 2:45 PM Post #2,011 of 3,842
Since you shared your postal stories, here is mine.
Drop did not put my house number on the package, so the postman decided not to deliver.
I can't get the post office to give me the package, even when, my name, the right street and the right postal code is on the package.
Not only am I the only guy with my name in that street, but worldwide there is no other person with my name.
A short Google would proof this to the postal office, but they are so rigid, that even after registering to their app and proofing that I am I, they say only drop can get them to hand me out my package.
Now I do hope that Drop reacts quickly since they told me it will get shipped back soon.
How can anybody be that sturdy o.O
How stupid is this…….😳

Dear music enthusiasts,

The OAE1 signatures are now arriving at their new owners. I would like to thank them most kindly for their trust in our work. The OAE1s are new and different from all other headphones. Doing something different from the familiar is always a risk especially for a small family business like grell. But I had to do it this way. It is the quintessence of my work as a headphone developer.

The OAE1s incorporate your individual ear into the shaping of the sound field like no other headphones and thus creates the right frequency response for you in the mid and high frequency range at your eardrum.

With its extended amount of low bass, it makes it possible to experience a part of the music that can hardly be perceived with conventional headphones.

However, the OAE1s also place some demands on the listener:

• Check the plugs are connected completely with a firm “click,”

• - The plug with the red insulators on the 2.5 mm pin is intended for the right earcup (R is inked on the earcup connection tube), so make sure that the plugs and earcups are connected the right way round, and

• Adjust the seating position so they sound good for your ears 😊As I've read in your comments and reviews, the OAE1s have given many of you a great new music experience - I was very happy to hear that!

Thank you very much and have fun with your new companion on your journey of discovery through the world of music!

One more thing: If you love your OAE1s please leave a note and 5 stars at Drop.com.

Mr. Grell,
I consider myself an audio enthusiast, and have invested tremendously in audio reproduction systems since I was a teenager. Do you know what all of those high fidelity systems all had in common? They were speaker-based, instead of headphone-based. Prior to your work on the HD800 I did not care for headphones, at all, for high fidelity audio reproduction. I thought they sounded way too closed in, with artificial sounding soundstage compared to speakers. Their only use to me was when I needed to keep quiet and couldn't make noise with speakers. The HD800 truly opened my eyes to what was possible when designers think different with headphone technology.

The Grell OAE1 has taken this to the next level with an even more 3-D audio than the HD800 had, and unlike the HD800 the experience varies from song to song - increasing the realism of soundstage expansion - and you can truly experience a speaker-like sound with headphones.

I really hope that the OAE1 is a success and people like me who prefer the "speaker sound" give them a shot. I'd love to see variations of this headphone in the future, maybe even one with a built in boom mic for gaming. I am sure you have other great ideas, too! Great job and good luck with your venture!

Hi Axel Grell! Thank you for your participation in this thread and for the nice and unique headphone at an affordable price. And for that I am now a fan.

I only left 4/5 stars because the headphone is somewhat uncomfortable to wear otherwise Id have given 5 stars. The soundstage is remarkable for a headphone. I may return because discomfort because I am a spoiled sensitive baby.

Your design is more special than I realized because I made this today and it is bass reverb city and just awful.

Ive got it hooked up to a kinki amp on low SE (and at a normal volume) fed by a soekris 2541 which isn't particularly bright. I stopped listening about five minutes ago and my ears are going nuts.

Maybe my ears are the problem.
There is a thing for you to look up - it is called dampening factor.
f.e. i got myself a FiiO KA17 which has output impedance at just under 1,5 Ohms and since the OAE1´s aren´t here yet, i try to use it with my 18Ohm headphones that i usually use for my music listening and gaming. I could not hear s**** clearly. Not because the headphones or the amp is bad - it is just too little dampening happening with this configuration.
Meaning the KA17 cannot controll my phones.
And i do sincerely believe that a lot of people who called the OAE1´s muddy, or not well resolving are falling for this trap.

Still adore these and regret no words I've hyped them with lol. Which is amazing because I wrote a lot of that during the honeymoon phase

But I have concluded these are basically closed cans or semi open cans

I say that as they isolate wonderfully, and the membrane, which looks similar to that which I remember on the outer edge of my HD800 creates a chamber, very open sound but more of a closed back form yet completely different world as far as engineering.

Instead of being over damped they are tuned to their "room"

I am starting off today where I finished last night. BF2 (OG) into Vali 3 with a nice clean tube. First up is Black Byrd by Donald Byrd (1973). One of my go-to jazz albums.
I didn't expect to like this combo so much.
I'm listening to my Vali 3 tonight as well and it is very nice, headphone sounds more dynamic than it has with my other amps.
