Home cooked headphones - Come one come all! Anyone welcome

Some walls added. Bass + warmth improved but needs more. When I partially cover up the holes at back of the cups the bass improves dramatically. Interestingly wide stage, but if I seal the cups too much then bass becomes a bit reverbery like if my head were inside a drum. Hmmm

Ill continue to experiment.

Nice! I would like to learn how to make a headband eventually. Does your headband have height adjustment? Most 3DP headband Ive seen so far look either somewhat fragile or too bulky but yours looks quite reasonable. I think I would add a suspension strap like @AsciiJC makes and be happy.

The 3DPrint lines look great like a Japanese Zen garden. I would love to have that texture on the outside of some 3DP headphone cups. Could be very artful!

The infill tool used for grills I havent tried to figure out yet but want to eventually because the gyroid pattern looks perfect.
I will be adding a suspension strap soon. I’m undecided on either a elastic adjustment or velcro adjustment.

I’ve been torture testing it and so far so good. No cracks have formed yet 🤞. The clamp is a little light so I think I might need to thicken it slightly to get more clamp pressure.

I use orca slicer. On there you can add modifiers to change the parameters of a specific part on a model.

Had to do make some adjustments for headband, moved female connector plug, and smoothed out interior walls. Printing Right channel now.

After experimenting with drivers and walls Ill create the rear cover for drivers/wires.

I think Ill start working on those headband wings today because Grell OAE1 could benefit now.

Nice work dude.

I wonder if a hinge could be implemented like k1k

nonetheless, very very interesting

Iused to wonder about sigma shell with dynamic driver :D

Axel Grell @xlcans kindly commented on my Sigma-style project. Ive been mostly leaving out commenting on the subjective sound qualities of my projects, so let me state my Sigma-style is terrible while OAE1 does sound great.

I feel my first build sounded good so wrote some impressions (link) but just not in this thread.

RE: Stax Sigma - style
- Printed different shaped cups in hopes that reduces sensation of bass reverberation and maybe make smoother frequency response. Still didnt make a rear wall as am still experiment with foam+tape, and maybe possibly putting rear wall on a hinge.

RE: hinge
- I made a hinge so one step closer to incorporating into a headphone.

Great effort to keep trying. And that hinge really could open up to some new designs.

i always thought mdr-f1 with 70mm driver but adjustable would be a nice headphone

Just need hinge like k1000

Might not be best of the best but great for long marathon days at the workstation

@buidoimiennui
Made a very nice F1-style headphone. link

Aliexpress has 70mm headphone drivers but I dont want to risk that much dough especially since they arent exactly a new experience to me since having owned Blon BL30 which uses a variation on these Ali drivers, and have owned MA900. Anybody know what’s wrong with just using loudspeaker drivers aside from weight? Most loudspeaker drivers are 4-8ohms, that would be a problem for headphone amps? Then I can just use a speaker amp, right?

Loudspeaker tweeters IIRC dont go low enough and are not designed to be right beside an eardrum. I could be wrong but it would seem like a dangerous idea.

Audio Technica i think sells drivers as spare parts or they used to anyway.

And generally work well is completely open designs.

R70x ad1k/2kx drivers if available as spares i would imagine have higher chance of success than many of the ali express stuff.

And iguess you're right about MA900 as being close to mdr-f1 with 70mm driver.

I may have to ask at diyaudio (i did once before a couple years ago but didnt get much feedback) or even try Parts Express support.

They are not completely open since pads also provide a degree of acoustic impedance and seal, or is the driver baffle open? Its been awhile since Ive owned an Audio Technica.

I have one headphone that I think is intended to do zero seal front and back. Bass is very low quantity as you can imagine. I dont use but I dont sell because Id like to use them as decoration.

Printed this “transparent blue” for next ~50mm driver Grado-style.

I wired exactly like my other headphones using same model connectors and cables but for some reason is only working with dual TS plug instead of dual TRS. Also very low sensitivity despite measured ~32ohm impedance. What is happening?
