I was just wondering if there is any purpose to the foam involved in the foam mod.  I'm all ready to do it, but won't if it dampens treble or serves some audio purpose (other than making them sound a little more closed in)?

Try out the mod. It's reversible, if you don't like it. The main theory around here is that Sennheiser are bastards and intentionally crippled the HD555/HD558 with that piece of foam, so people would buy the higher-priced models.

Ahhh ...  Some people actually do like the 555's more than the 595's.
