...that their enjoyment of listening to music is severely diminished by dodgy hearing?

Obviously everything is relative, occasionally my hearing is fine and listening to music is very enjoyable. The rest of the time every tube in my head seems to be full of mucus and my music sounds like soup.
Just to confirm I can hear the music but it is almost like my brain is completely unable to proccess it. Or to put it another way I can hear the sound but it doesn't really appear to "enter" my head and resonate properly, its like it just sort of stops at my ears. Occassionally I will yawn and glorious sound will leak in for a few seconds, only to be slowly pushed out as everything returns to normal. The effect being that all my music sounds very mushy and lifeless. All very hard to describe...guh

Any tips, advice, stories would be greatly appreciated. If you have similar problems then feel free to share your pain!

On a more serious note I was wondering if this problem is worse with headphones as opposed to speakers due to the difference methods of transmitting the sound.

Thanks

No not really... I have had severr cold and still enjoyed music a lot... I find the mood I am in play a much bigger part how much I enjoy music.

I suppose this is why so many try to get drunk before listening to music

Do you have hearing loss? Have you seen a doctor? You might just have a bit of wax buildup. I'm pretty careful to keep my ears clean, but an ear cleaning might straighten out your hearing. It's worth going in for an exam and a flushing.

Insert 'you need a stronger amp for your brain' comment here.

Same for me. Though some songs almost always put me in a good/productive mood.

You know, the shape of your ear canal changes somewhat when you open your mouth wide; thus the advice to do that when trying to earplugs in deeper. And possibly the fact that you can get normal sound when you yawn (or is that only sometimes?).

So, it sounds like you may be blocked up somehow. The fact that your hearing is also occasional fine seems to go along with that. Do you feel like you have a cold or your ears are stuffed up or anything? Also bear in mind, people's ears are probably different; oqvist may be able to listen to music with a cold while it hardly appeals to me (even if I do want to listen!).

I recommend you see somebody about it and get fixed up or get some sort of treatment. That really is a bummer.

I agree that you should see an ENT (ear, nose, throat) specialist or an audiologist.
Sounds like you have issues with your eustachian tubes. Could be from allergies, altitude, elevators, minor infection, etc. Many things can cause fluid buildup or pressure changes in these.
You might also have issues with your hearing in general or with a different specific portion of your inner ear.

Best to you.
