My hypothesis on the purple ends: there is a component in the plastic that is fluorescent (lots of compounds do this). The more ultraviolet energy in the incident light, the more blue light they emit, and the more purple they look. In short, they are glowing. Personally I find it a very cool feature. Hey, it could have been green!
