So just when I thought I am getting to the pinnacle of what my system can produce...
Two days in, about 50 hours of the modded Nordost Odin 2 balanced XLR in system. I have heard a lot of high end cables in my time and these modded cables sound stunning! I know the following will sound like an exaggeration, but I am not kidding. They are lowering noise at and during transmission, and I do not remember ever hearing any factory high end cables do this. At any price. I have listened to real Nordost Odin 2, upper end JPS Labs cables, $10K+ Transparent Audio cables, I have real Audioquest Sky, etc., they do not do this. High end cables sound different than say a $1K interconnect and usually excel in one or few areas of sound reproduction. But usually one can say, or most will say they do something different and excel at some area of audio reproduction.
So what is the difference vs before modding them? For example when listening to the same say fast 130bpm+ Techno the bass is faster, hits harder (more akin to a good musical subwoofer) and is more textured. The overall presentation has the feel of better precision and power, timing although does not sound different, it feels more accurate. How sounds are separated, move in space, with extreme precision and timing, was like I was high or something. Absolutely a cool experience. Last night I was listening to the system, all different genres, music I know well. I could not stop, I just loved what I was experiencing and did not want the experience to stop. Vocals, wow, just everything improved further.
The project was 8 or so hours. This is to build the ground box and mod the interconnects. Cost for the mod (including ground box) or I will call upgrade was about $150 for all the parts. If you want to improve the audio performance of your system, think you are capable of the mod, have the time and the funds... Just do it! Mod an interconnect that you already really like. Do exactly what I did, I highly doubt you will regret it.
I am just sharing this, so people can experience this. Before anyone talks smack about this, try it first, prove me wrong. Of course like anything audio, YMMV. But I doubt you will be unhappy with the results if your results are anywhere like mine. Keep this in mind, it is possible the same mod I did to the digital cable that is supplying the signal could be adding to the performance of the modded XLR balanced interconnects.
