When I listen to songs with a lot of Bass the vocals become distorted and choppy at loud volumes( not extremely loud but loud enough for the Bass to have an impact).

I was listening on my phone using a ZO2 and the song was an MP3.

Could It be I need to listen to FLAC or need better equipment? Or is that normal for that to happen at loud volumes.

It sounds like clipping, but XB1000s aren't the most power hungry, so it's strange that it's happening. it could be a poorly mastered mp3.

never experienced anything like that with my xb1000s... could be a source problem

do you have bass up on the players eq? if you do you should set it back to neutral as that can cause distortions when used in conjuction with a zo2, also you might have to make sure your zo2 is fully charged, were you in high or low gain?
 
 
its probably a combination of low quality source and having eq settings interfere with the zo2
