1) Store my library on it lossless (100+GB).
2) Intuitive to use.
3) Above average sound quality, can be modded to obtain better.
4) Reasonably small footprint so it travels without requiring a separate bag. Fits in hand.
5) Ability to be powered via wall-wart for more amplification w/high impedance headphones. 12 hours battery life at least.

I present the Kramer modded DAP
biggrin.gif
(in order of desire)

-Durability, first and foremost. A $300 audio component should last at LEAST 5-6 years. I have $20 PCDPs that are going on ~15 years old. I find it disgusting how current MP3 player manufacturers INTENTIONALLY design their junk to crap out after 2-3 years max. For this reason alone I will never spend more than ~$50-60 on an MP3 player.
-Lossless support
-Optical or coax digital output
-Variable gain switch for the headphone amp
-AD8397 based headphone amp circuit
-Line level output fed by a GOOD-sounding dac chip
-Flash memory, via multiple SD card slots, leave it up to the user to configure capacity as needed
-Simple LCD display thats back-lit
-Battery thats easily replace-able
-Windows drag-drop support
-Minimum of ~15 hour battery life
-Recharge battery with either USB or wall-wart
-faster than "average" file transfer speeds

Don't need:
-Crappy headphones, save the land-fills!!
-RoHS compliance
-Proprietary operating software
-Color display
-Video support, I have my cell-phone for that.
-Line-in or mic recording of any type

hmmm (i think this should be possible).

1gb built in memory.
2 SD slots (since were should be seing 16gb sd cards soon).
Good sound quality (both a good amp and good dac), with a 1/8th mini lineout jack.
No touchscreen, and controls that can easily browse a large library.
Black and white screen.
Small as possible with 15hr+ battery life.
Flac support.

Honestly i think it can be done.

Sadly, I have to agree with this. I bought a Panasonic PCDP 10 years ago for $70 and it's still running happily today, and being a CD player it already plays gapless. Now I'm looking at $200+ players that only last until the next model comes out and a simple feature such as gapless is often neglected.

now I'm contemplating if I want to buy another PCDP... just for back-up ya' know...

-Karma-like customizable EQ, plus additional multi-level bass boost
-no hiss
-drag n' drop
-40+ hours battery life
-16/32 gb flash player
-out of the head soundstage
-powerful output (for use with fullsize/Yuin Pk1): I have to second Kramer with a gain switch, on this
-NO HISS! (should I repeat it?
biggrin.gif
)
-Meier-like crossfeed
-Gapless
-Mini to mini line-out
-Ability to play FLAC, OGG Vorbis, MPC

Sound like I want a Cowon D2 on steroids.

- 25gb Flash
- 12+ hour batt life
- USB Charging and Upload interface
- Drag & Drop Interface along with a Windows style organization (so I can move files and Folders)
- no internal amp (hiss free line-out headphone jack, allows for my choice of sound sig by amp matching)
- Supports FLAC and MP3 all bit rates
- Firmware updates for new formats (if better than FLAC comes out)
- Extremely durable (rubber over steel maybe??), with solid detent buttons (up, down, left, right, play, pause, seek, skip, menu and power on/off/standy)
- Deck of cards size
- Decent screen with album art
- Servicable by manufacturer (1 year warranty parts and labor, 5 yr parts only)
-Line in (records to choice of bit rates)

<$200

does that sound reasonable?

1)20+ battery life, in that case, it would have to be a flash player.
2)I like the idea of 1GB built-in +2 expandable slots -very nice if you buy one card to begin with and buy another later
3)Powerful headphone out (more than the D2)
4) MUST COME WITH ACCESSORIES!!! I hate the mainstream players like the ipod/zen/zune/some sony that don't come with a freaking wall charger
5) line-out/gapless would be a bonus, I don't use an amp at the moment anyways

A fair compromise for price would be to:
1) brick video support (I never watch videos on any media player except a tv/computer)
2) colourless screen (nothing fancy, as long as it has multiple lines of display)
3) all that line-in crap + stock headphones (what kramer said)
4) any other useless features :p

Forgot to add something. Replaceable battery baby! Do you know the thrill it is to have 6 batteries in hand for a DAP?

FLAC files all loaded up in a heated car trip. Eargasm until the battery is depleted. Of course lossless is important but it's quite mute with only one battery at hand. And what happens years later when that battery will fail? Even if you send it back to the manufacturer, there's an extreme likelihood that they no longer carry any accessories for that player any longer.

Better to buy 30 batteries or so, freeze them and enjoy a good sounding DAP for 5+ years. Until the hard drive craps out on that is. HAHA

Pretty much Zune 2.0.

Good headphone out, durable, hard to scratch, at least 30GB even though I'll never fill 1/2, good color screen.

I wish Zune 2.0 would have a custom EQ and line out though. I guess the custom EQ is still possible.
