Denon D5000 VS. D7000
Jun 11, 2009 at 5:50 PM Post #47 of 90
Now this may be a rather old thread, but I had the chance to audition the d5000 and d7000 on a Solo SRG.

I listen to my fair share of female vocals like Alison Krauss, Eva Cassidy and some singers probably more popular in Asia like Olivia Ong and Emi Fujita. The d7000 performs EXCELLENT with female vocals. A very nice and lush sound, and the bass is very smooth.

However, I do like to listen to other genres, which include Pop and Metal. That's where I prefer the 5000. The 7000 made Metallica's "Enter Sandman", Radiohead's "Creep" and Katy Perry's "Hot and Cold" sound artificial. Some might disagree, but I felt the bass became too smooth. I can't feel the punch to the songs, meaning I no longer feel like playing air-guitar or do some major head-banging

.

In conclusion I personally feel that the 5000 is more of a versatile phone. It handles whatever is thrown at it WELL enough. Meanwhile the 7000 is a more genre-specific headphone. In any case, I prefer the 5000 for it's versatility.

(And another reason for the preference: I still love my HD600 much more than the d7000 for vocals. Call me a Senn fanboy

Jumping in here, I have to say that I'm a basshead and really like the D5000 and the D7000 both. The problem with the D5000s is that not every kind of music you listen to is funk but they sorta make it sound like funk due to how much mid bass they have. This is likely something you get used to though (like having a subwoofer always on in your music system or car).

With the D7000s, there is a more balanced and accurate sound, also the mids and highs are better. When the bass needs to kick, it kicks. But it doesn't kick with all music. So, if you want a more refined sound and are willing to spend the money, the D7000s would be what to get. If you want to save some money and really enjoy great bass, get the D5000s.

Never forget a reviewers motivation and his is to sell his mod. First and foremost!

True...not always, just something to think about.

He still has a vested interest in pushing his mod (I'm not saying he is, it's just something to consider)...he still does offer the services and there's always "see I told you so, I can make'em better than Denon"...

Again, I'm not saying that this is the case, just always consider a reviewers reference point.

I have owned in the past the D5000 and D2000. I currenlty own a pair of D2000 with wood cups and APS V3 cable and also the D7000 among others.

Comparing the Denons IMO is clear to me that the D7000 is a superior headphone due to better and more refined detail and also better imaging in the soundstage.

Comparing the D7000 to the rest of my collection they are still my favorite ones.

I am thoroughly impressed with my new D7000s (arrived today). Right out of the box they sound incredible. I posted a mini review on another thread:

Just awesome!

For us, european, it is not too easy to find shops in wich you can test hi-end / hi-priced headphones. In italy we have difficulties to find also availability of these products (I usually buy from online stores in England or USA). But every year I'm going to Hong Kong for working reason and I have the opportunity to test some of the very best headphones (and amps) in some shops there as for example "Mingo" and "KingSound" in Mongkok for those who knows them.

These shops are little rooms with thousands headphones/IEMs all around in the perfect chinese style. It is something that the first time could let you going crazy

Anyway now I'm here and I've tested both the Denon 5000 and 7000.
I have to agree with someone that tell the 5000 are less bright and clear.. but for me more enjoyable to listen! So I decided with no regret to buy the D5000. I simply love their "tube", analog, soft, warm sound (see my headphone collection below.. I do not love too much bright headphones).

Anyway D7000 is a great headphone too, very similar to my Ultrasone Ed. 9 wich I've sold for comfort issues.

My current headphones: Sennheiser HD600, Original MB Quart QP400, new German Maestro (ex MB Quart) GMP400, Denon D5000, UE Triple.fi 10pro vi (sold: AKG 701, Ultrasone Ed.9).

Andrea.

I picked them up from Headroom. They are going for $699 if you call them. And probably the best headphone company out there!
