The two sets really are different, the one with grey pads is louder by 9 dB, and brighter. White/black pads set is bassier and darker.

Question. How do you open the cups?

And also, do you like the ones with the gray pads or the black pads?

It looks like Denon/Foster figured out the headphones were exceeding some loudness standards somewhere, so they cut the loudness by 9 dB. And made the AH-P372 less bright.

The black are obnoxiously bassy on obnoxiously bassy tracks. The grey have some midrange/high frequencies to compensate (they're like large earbuds in this, nice spatious treble). Everything's airier and less fatiguing on the grey.

So the black pads are bass-heavy and darker, and grey are white/airy/spatious and brighter.

By the way: you can see the pads through packaging, so you could ask a seller which to ship.

What the cotton ring does is improve space a bit and remove that "well" reverb the stock configuration has. The cotton doesn't have to cover ventilation holes or the reflector dish.

The black aren't that bad, but the grey have much better instrument separation (that depends on treble/high frequencies). They're both fast and detailed, but the black are duller.

All the usual - speed, clarity, unveiling, etc. etc. Makes them sound more whole. They're fluid too, they're just bassy.

What is the Markl mod?

The recable already made the bass so defined and powerful, it was unbearable on some tracks (Berlongieri's "Solar Ignite" from Descent 3).
