I do not have the ATH-AWAS, and it has been nearly a month since I've heard them. I haven't been able to compare them side-by-side, however, since the store that I usually audition the Audio-Technica headphones at doesn't carry any Denon products. And what about ATH AWAS ?
However, from memory, the AH-D9200 has a more robust and textured bass presentation. It is also the brighter headphone, with very good clarity and detail in the higher registers. I preferred listening to dance music, my genre-of-choice, on the Denon, thanks to its sculpted and defined low-end region, coupled with an energetic and brilliant treble section.
Sorry for the less-than-helpful response, as my time with the Audio-Technica was very limited. Ideally, I'd like to compare the 2 together, and I'm hoping that I could find some time this week to do so. I might be heading down to my local store to audition a few headphones, including the ATH-AWAS, and if I do so, I'll bring along my AH-D9200 to compare the 2. I'll let you know again if I do so.
