Hi guys,

I am considering either the HD800 or D7000 for my next purchase.

The HD800 is Aus$2000 and the D7000 $2100 - dearer than 800. I just auditioned 800 and thought AMAZING in the first few minutes - after perhaps 15 minutes I realised fatigue is kicking in hard. I cannot audition D7000 - must be ordered in.

That is a CRAZY price for the Denon. At that price, you could fly from AUS to Tokyo, have an awesome sushi dinner, buy the D7000 in Akihabara for about $700 USD, spend the night in a nice hotel, and STILL come out ahead!!!!

Seriously.

Buy the HD800. And if you still want to try the D7000, watch the "For Sale" forums here carefully, and buy used.

Thanks for the insight guys.

Didn't think you guys are so un-biased - Except for some reverse psychology attempts (looking at you Nachkebia

) - thought you guys would simply shove D7000 down my throat being a D7000 thread n all.

I understand. I must buy both and eat cheese on bread for a while.

I have the HD650, but not the D7000...yet! From what I have read trolling head-fi, these are very different beasts but comparable for their bassiness. The D7000 definitely goes lower and has more bass, but people feel the mid-range is slightly recessed. The highs extend well, whereas the HD650 may be touch more polite. The HD800 and D7000 are so different, it's probably worth owing both and using them for stuff they do well with, or depending on your mood for slam or articulation.

For me, my dream can would be one with the bass of the D7000s, or maybe 10 per cent less bass emphasis and the highs and forward character of an SR225 or RS1 (the latter I have not heard).

Skylab's right - atrocious pricing for the D7000.

Hangon there SKYLAB... werent you one of the few members that prefer D7000 over HD800 - I took your opinion in high regard. You now advise on the HD800 - is your preference based on price?

Cheers champ.

Thing is you will get screwed if you try to sell the D7000 after having bought it at that price. If you buy the HD 800 you will get more in return that will more then easilly fund a used D7000 when it shows up... win/win

I do personally prefer listening to the D7000 over the HD800, but the HD800 is the technically superior headphone in many regards, and does perform better in quite a few dimensions. I just prefer music on the D7000

But oqvist hit the nail on the head - if you pay $2000 AUS for the HD800, and you decide you don't like them, you have some hope of recovering most of the money. If you pay $2100 AUS for Denon D7000, you have no hope of recovering that. And moreover, it just isn't worth it!!!

But anyway, this is silly - if you go to pricejapan.com, you can get the D7000 shipped to AUS for $1000 AUS - I just checked. So there is NO need to pay $2100 AUS for these.

Then you could consider my pair of modded Denons (see the IC Thread in my signature). They are smooth in the highs (but not polite or laidback), and have a lower quantity of bass that my Denons in stock form had; but more detailed and speedier, and Forward mids. All with the advantage of the speed and detail over the stock drivers.

HOLY **** I just got the d7000's, after having the ath-a700's for almost 2 years, the quality on these new headphones is AMAZING. It feels so solid and its all metal, and the 700's are plastic and crappy, THIS IS AMAZING, and I havent even listened to them yet cuz I'm waiting for my 1/4 to 1/8 adapter to come in the mail from headroom
frown.gif

BUT OMG SO AWESOME, i've been staring at them for the past 2 hours, only downside is that the outside of the box for the headphones was severely dented on one corner (from J&R), but meh.

Also, now that I have these headphones, I'm afraid of them breaking after the one year manufacturer warranty, and was thinking about getting a Squaretrade warranty for $85 for 3 years, starting from the day I purchased the headphones. Any opinions on this? I do not know what the failure rate of these headphones are, so I cannot make a decision as to whether $85 for 3 years of protection is worth it (only covers electrical/mechanical damages, not accidental damages caused by the user).

If you want extra peace of mind go for the added protection. But do know retailers, actuaries live off these insurance fees. There was a thread here that asked if what you're asking is worth it. I think it may help to look into that thread further.

I've been listening/burning in my 7000's for about 36 hours. A friend just stopped over with his d5000's and headroom micro stack for a little comparison. I didn't have a ton of time and I'm not great with descriptions anyway, but for what it's worth I thought the difference was interesting. The 5000's seemed to go deeper on the bass but at the cost of some clarity. It seemed as if the two phones had a similar range, but the 5000's had a range that started deeper and the 7000's had a range that went higher. I'll try to set up another comparison after mine have had more time to burn in and when I have more time for critical listening. Now I just have to decide if I need a ss amp to pair with them......
