Surprising that you find the D7000 has less bass than the LCD-2 - I thought people found it to be the other way around, might be an amp-issue?

The LCD-2 has better deeper bass, but I always found that the D7000s had more thump and impact.

Finally, after long hours of reading and trying to decide between RS1i vs. LCD-2 and D7000, I went with the Denons from J&R. Not that I think they are better than the other two. I wish the folks at Audeze had more peeps to help with their emails and products, I just couldn't wait for another month or so to get a response. I hope D7000 will give me a different experience than with my cans at the moment (SR225i and HD650).

If you don't own either headphone the D7000 is hands down better in my opinion with more refined bass, better midrange, and s'more extended and detailed treble. If you already own the D5000 an upgrade is a bit harder to swallow as the cost of the loss you will incur on the D5000 and the subsequent extra cost of the D7000 would be a bitter pill. Although if you buy used it might balance out.

It depends on whether you want less but more controlled bass and more treble. You could also doing a markle mod to the D5000, something I will not consider for the D7000.

Well... as I've said in the past... I think the MarkL Mod does a disservice to the D5000. I would not recommend it.
If you need to keep the D5000 (which is a very good HP), EQ some of the bass out of it. You'll retain the great sound (above 300hz) and subdue the flabby, bloated bass somewhat. Obviously EQ-ing has it's issues and that's why I don't.

I completely agree with dweaver that the D7000 is far superior to the D5000, not only in the ways mentioned, but just in overall tonality and clarity. It's a phenominal HP, and I'm more than happy about having upgraded.

The LCD2 is at least two classes above the Denon.

I bet they are! All the raving reviews and impressions point to that direction which means that I'll definitely purchase them at some point eventually. But if I had bought them now, I would've been thinking about what would it have been like to listen to the D7000. So I hope I didn't make a bad decision

*orders of magnitude in price
>fix'd.  The LCD2 are a whole different monster than the Denon, so a comparison is unfair.  Although they're both flagship headphones, they're a different type (planar dynamic vs. dynamic) and in different classes.  With that extra class comes a bigger price tag for a smaller return.
Edit: Well don't I feel foolish?  It appears you can get a pair of LCD-2s for $945 from Audeze (with a month-long wait time, however).
Also, my pair of D7000s are coming on Tuesday.  So excited!

While I agree the LCD-2 are a better headphone technically they may not be a better headphone musically for all people. In my case I find I prefer the bass of the D7000 over the LCD-2, I agree 100% with Macedonianhero's comment above in this regard but find I like the impact more than the deeper sound which I find droning at times. I also like the treble of the D7000 more, it rides to fine line between being strident and too tame. As for the added detail of the LCD-2 I find that to be a balancing act as well, to much detail causes me to be distacted by the detail versus listening to the music and on less than perfect tracks it becomes annoying as well. The D7000 for me captures just the right amount of detail to convey the emotion and nuances of the music without crossing the line.

As for comfort I prefer the lighter D7000 as well but do like the comfort of them both ear pressure wise.

I have almost build my beta 22 fully balanced amp and connected (balanced) Denons 7000 - OMG! Completely different (way much better) sounding headphones, if you get a chance to try this combo - I think it well worth it. Bass now under full control (not a hint of bloating or overpower), much clear midrange and so nice treble, I really enjoy it (again). No doubt - it is a keeper.

Yup balanced makes the D7000 even that much nicer, saving up for a balanced amp and waiting for RW Audio to get their design finished :).

if anyone out there can recommend a 6.3mm --> 3.5mm adapter, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Do you mean 1/4" to 1/8"?  It helps when you put standard in there.

thanks for the reply.  These are exactly what I'm looking for but am unsure what you mean by "standard"?  I thought the adapters were always referred to by their "mm" size designation.

Across the pond we call 6.3 mm 1/4 inch and the 3.5 mm 1/8th inch.
