Denon AH-D5200 (little brother of the AH-D7200)

The 5200 should be at level of a th900 or TH-X00 driver Because instead of the faster carbon mix diaphragm of the 7200,
it is using a paper type (biocelulouse typr) diaphragm, similar to those Fostex drivers.

This is interesting. Just sifting through this thread, reading about the AH-D5200 as they are currently at a good price on Amazon and i'm thinking of buying one, now I think I will buy the AH-D7200 instead! "faster carbon mix diaphragm of the AH-D7200"...
from that comment, it sounds to me that the drivers of the AH-D7200 may be a little bit superior. Interesting stuff.

Yes the 5200 is a nice option to all the other fostex, and the THX00 series is also very nice.
They are all pleasant mid grade cans.
Same level to an ZMF Eikon which actually has a nicer signature.

Anyways, the 7200 is a smarter option if you find them at a good price, because they actually did imorove a step up in resolve over the others mentioned above, yet the signature is a warm one so it remains a personal preference but as with the others you can try to mod them just check the threads.

I think i'm definitely going to buy the AH-D7200 now. I had the Fostex TH-X00 Purpleheart and whilst I did like it I found the bass to be a bit overpowering at times. it seems that the AH-D7200 has a sound signature that I will prefer, and if it is more resolving then that's a bonus. Thanks for posting. Appreciated.

Once you get the AH-D7200, post back in this thread to tell us how you feel about them please.
Assuming you are referring to me, I will do. I should be able to get the AH-D7200 in a couple of weeks and I also plan on getting the Sony MDR Z7 MK2.

Can someone possibly tell me how D5200 compares to D2000? Im just thinking would it be an upgrade if my D2000 decides to break up.

I'm in the same boat, I've tried TH-X00 Mahogany, TH-X00 Ebony, E-Mu Teak, and ultimately came back to my trusted D2000 because of tonality and sound stage. The D2000 has wider sound stage also more balanced for my taste (not too cold not too warm).

However the ear pad is dying and I'm having trouble finding replacement pads, while it function exactly fine but would still like to know if one day my D2000 breaks there will be a solid replacement (might have to try TH610 pads).

That being said I'm also curious as to know if this would serve as a direct upgrade over the D2000.

I sold my D2000 a while back so can't do a direct comparison, but definitely quality and fit is nicer with the D5200. I feel the bass and treble is a bit more polite with the D5200, I sometimes found the D2000 a bit hot depending on track - not sibilant just a bit fatiguing at times.

Thanks for the feedback, do you find the sound stage and airiness of the D2000 are still there in D5200? I think that was my biggest disappoint with the TH-X00 series, they just sounded too narrow otherwise everything else is good.

Also from what I read is that D5200 is somewhat more relaxed, but would it still be dynamic and punchy enough for rock?

You're welcome. I sold my D2000 a while back and have been mostly listening to iems so I will not have the ability to accurately compare. I feel that the D5200 has a satisfying soundstage, I'm sure nothing less than the D2000.
The mids are a little bit more present than the D2000 so it makes it probably even better for rock. Perhaps there is slightly less bass with the D5200 or it could just be it is a little more balanced because of the mids. If you like the bass you could consider the old D5000.
I always recommend being able to try before you buy as everyone else's opinions may vastly differ for your own - I'm not very competent at sharing impressions so I don't want to put you wrong.
I always liked Denon and liked the look of the new models - I would have bought the D7200 but I also wanted some new iems so chose the D5200. I was in Japan and had a huge range of options but played it safe with the Denons.

D2000 and D5000 are basically the same headphone but with different earcups, to my understanding its possible to mod D2K to equal D5K.
