Denon AH-7200

I have ordered 7200 and it should arrive in a few days. In the meantime, I'm picking up some wire to upgrade the internal wiring. At the moment I am considering these options from neotech:
  • UPOCC Silver 22AWG Teflon stranded 0.325 mm2
  • UPOCC Silver 22AWG Teflon mono wire 0.33 mm2
  • UPOCC Gold plated Silver 24AWG stranded 0,2 mm2
I'm not sure whether to go with a mono wire or a stranded one in terms of acoustic and mechanical properties. Perhaps the softer stranded cable can stick to other parts and create unnecessary vibrations, so a stiffer mono wire is preferable?

To improve the sound and provide more flexibility in connection I started looking for a replacement for the stock 7200 cable. On one of the YouTube channels in the review of Hifiman Arya, the reviewer recommended the “ivipq 34” cable from ali.

I also liked its replacement tips and since it only cost about $70-80 I bought this ivipq 34 to give it a try. I paid $72 for 1,5m.

After a direct comparison, I have to say that either the standard 7200 cable is bad or this cable from aliexpress is very good.

It was mentioned somewhere in this thread that the 7200 has a somewhat cartoonish sound.

I remembered this mention when I started listening it with the ivipq 34. With this cable the headphones suddenly start to sound much more lifelike, and with stock cable it really has some less realistic sound in comparison. Perhaps because ivipq gives better microdynamic.

In addition, the level of details and tonal variety is greatly increased, the sound became more effortless, mellow and fluid.

The soundstage has also improved. The SS with the stock cable can be strange, especially on some tracks. The odd thing is that headphones sometimes tend to place sound sources not in front of the listener's face, but above their head. With the new cable, this "feature" is less noticeable to my ears.

The headphones start to sound on a whole new level, at least in my system. I am very glad I tried this cable, in my opinion it is a significant upgrade without much effort and expense.

Anyone compared beyerdynamic t5 (3rd gen) with d7200?
Recently got a pair of these and main takeaway is that there are more similarities than differences. Sound signature is exactly the same. 7200 has ever so slightly more body in the bass and the T5 has slightly more speed. 7200 mids have ever so slightly more warmth and forwardness and the T5 have ever so slightly more sizzle in the upper mids. Highs are a wash with the 7200 sounding very natural and maybe the T5 having ever so slightly more air if that is your preference. People talk about rolled off highs on the 7200 and I don’t hear any of that. Resolution is the basically the same on both. If T5 soundstage is a 8.5/10, I’d give the 7200 maybe an 8.7.

The 7200 is not as good at isolating external sounds if that is important in your listening environment. Comfort is basically the same on my head. Overall the headphones are so similar it wouldn’t be unreasonable for someone to fail in a blind test depending on the song and level of focus.

Neither headphone is lacking in any particular area sound-wise and should just take into account preferences. If it were me, I’d buy based on price and/or which design you like more. 7200 does feel and look more like a $1000 headphone to me though. The wood and the satin polished aluminum are also just class.

Hello,

I hear/read for the first time that there are new drivers for the AH-D7200.

I bought my AH-D7200 in September 2017, so it will have the original drivers.

Where can I buy a pair of new drivers?
Is it very difficult to exchange the drivers?

Thanks for your help,
greetings from Germany,
Alexander

Thanks for the information.
I just tried, it does noch change anything: Neither PC nor mobile phone.
Maybe they do not accept customers from overseas?

I can try it on Wednesday from my office-PC at the enterprise I work for.

I just want to share my experience regarding a new cable for a 7200.

Difference in cables
I bought the 7200 second hand. It came with the original cable which was about 3 meters long and a shorter cable that I think was bought from amazon called "replacement cable" for denon and other brands.

At first I was excited and happy to listen through my receiver (denon pma9200hne) which has a pretty warm signature sound. I also tried it with a USB dragonfly black DAC. I used the original cable to the headphones. The headphones had a large soundstage just like many other describe it. But the highs were far too warm for my taste. The bass wasn't anything special. In summary I had a good experience while listening to it but I was curious if the sound could be better. After seeing this thread, I got interested in buying a better cable. I tried the amazon cable and I noticed that the sound got better (better highs and a bit more soundstage).

Trying the new cable
I looked up a online hifi retailer at my country where I landed on buying the beyerdynamic audiophile cable for about 140 euros. When I got it I was a bit nervous since I bought my headphones for a bit more than twice the price of the cable. But as soon as I heard the first note with the new cable, all my thoughts and worries were blown away. The highs were just as I wanted them to be, no longer too warm and they where more detailed. The bass was stronger but also more sturdy. Everything about the sound was better compared to the old cables, especially the original cable.

This got me thinking if the old original cable maybe was broken or something. I would never recommend anyone the amazon cable either. It's like buying a cheap tractor tire for your Ferrari. All in all, it feels like my headphones are playing at their best and I can understand all the praise the 7200 has received.

I'd recommend trying different cables
I think I've read online that it's like "snake oil" to buy a new cable for your headphones but for me it was a really big difference between original, amazon and beyerdynamic cable. Only regret I have is that I didn't buy the cable earlier. If you're not happy with the 7200, try a different cable. It made way more difference in sound than when I tried my amp vs USB DAC.

Now I wonder how my 130 euros cable compare to a 400 euro cable... But first I have to rediscover all my favorite songs with the beyerdynamic cable!
