DENAFRIPS Terminator: the King of R2R dac

as I mentioned, I am having good luck with poorly master recordings so far. But I will say that if your system is making a good chunk of your music not sound so good, then the DAC, the new component is not worth it. That is the one thing that frustrates me to no end about the high end, most gear is seemingly designed to sound only good with the best recordings. The poor to mediocre stuff can sound better in a car, boom box or headphones. Wouldn't make sense to be in NOS mode for poor recordings?

@Kclone, that's great. I'm glad that for you the DAC is helping for with the poor recordings. Btw, do you have an example? I would like to compare it on my system. With that said, I some what disagree with you, high-end components are designed to play what has been recorded, I don't expect my components to improve the bad recordings. As you go up the high-end chain, in my view the recordings just becomes more revealing. At the end of the day for me as an audiophile, I want my system to produce music that is going to get me closest to listening to live music - neutral with no coloration due to the DAC, AMP or speaker (really hard to do). It's not a compliant, bad recording are just bad. There are plenty of really good recorded music out there. Your question on NOS mode for poor recordings, I say it's really up to the individual's taste. If you enjoy the details and the "truth" of the recording in NOS mode, I say keep on listening. :)

Well, yes you are right in the main problem is the recording it's self. I mean, if they could make Dark Side of the Moon in 1972, then why can't production be at that standard or like it going forward? As far as the truth of the recording, that is going down a rabbit hole in my opinion. What does that even mean? So yes, I am after what sounds good to me. As for examples, Husker Du's Zen Arcade and ABC's song Be Near Me. The second one makes me want to leave the room if the system can't handle it. I have McIntosh gear, which is on the warm side of neutral so maybe that helps me out some too. Sure there are plenty of good recordings, but I listen to a lot of rock and pop, and some of my favorite music does not have the best production. So if I am going to be in this hobby, I figure I am going to construct my system in a way that I can enjoy it the best.

After couple of weeks listening to Denafrips Terminator , I 'm very pleased with this dac .

First the source was an old laptop , now SOtM sms 200 ultra .

The sound is wonderfull : clear , neutral , transparant , not tiresome , almost analogue .

This doesn't mean the sound is thin . No , there is more air around the instruments ,

the bass is vivid , effortless ,

Looks like the orkest plays in bigger hall .

I plays music now less loud because there is no need to ; I can hear all the instruments without playing with

high volume .

Addictive .

set up :

Denafrips Terminator DAC
SOtM sMS 200 ultra streamer
Bow Warlock pre amp
Bow Walrus amp
Infinity Renaissance 90 speakers

Pictures will follow

Hi Cygnusx! I haven't been able to do lesening so much as I would to the Terminator for the last couple of weeks becouse of health problems I had. I'm getting better so I expect to be able to come with same listening impressions.
But the word that explan better for me the Terminator sound is "peaceful". No sign of harshness and full of detail, you just can't stop leasing to the music, you I'll see what I mean-:) It is fantastic...

Hope you're feeling better. Definitely want to hear your comparison with the Ciunas since I have one too though funds wise I'd probably be at the Ares level so too bad you didn't get that one instead.

cygnusx-I read your comparison between the Terminator and the Codex with great interest. I own a Codex and agree with your assessment. It makes even mediocre recordings sound "pretty, pretty good."

I am considering adding a Terminator to my system (AR Ref-75, LS-27SE, Aurender and ProAc speakers) because R2R sound is appealing. With many more hours of listening have your initial comparative impressions changed?
