Decision: Stock D5000 or APS V3 D2000?

Again, from what little I've read about comparative sonic differences between the D5000 and D2000, the D2000 have been generally billed as "more forward" than the D5000; and the D5000 as "more refined" than the D2000. Theoretically, that's enough to persude me to cast my otherwise experientially ignorant ballot for the D2000. Because I like "forward"! : )

Day's End Tally:
That's APS V3/D2000 "4", D5000 "5" (including an implicit proxy, reciting a previous Markl post--a vote of dubious origin and questionable validity) and "1" undecided (cast directly by Markl himself).

I think might take two aspirin and PM EyeAmEye tomorrow morning. : )

YMMV so all I can say is how it worked out for me...

1. I bought a new D2000. Even without burn-in, I liked it a lot.
2. Then I bought a new D5000. It arrived physically damaged but worked fine. For all the extra cash, I wasn't sufficiently extra impressed. I returned the D5000.
3. I then sent the D2000 to Alex for a V3 recable. Fantastic. Money well spent.
4. I then buy a Markl MD5000. After a 2-day can-off, I sell the MD5000 and conclude that I'll keep the APS V3 D2000 forever.

I'm way more into the music than the gear but in a nutshell, the MD5000 had great refinement while the APS V3 D2000 had major-league "slam," really one of the best cans I've ever heard.

At the same price point I would always choose the APS V3 D2000 over the stock D5000. But like I said, YMMV.

So there is a data point for you. Hope this helps.

+1
I had a fully burn-in D2000 and sold it a week or 2 ago. Now i have the D5k, fully burn-in too, package nicely, ready to send it back. I ordered a pair of d2k w/ blue dragon, hoping to get it next week or so. I can give you some feedback if you would like. D5k - i have to agree with markl, bass is a little disappointing and i think is the woodie that is causing the problem. Now that i think about markl mod, puting a dynamat on the d5k earcup is more or less the same as having the d2k compound metal earcup? Maybe someone can please share their experience on markl d5k and stock d2k, if you have listened to both of them.

Mark, thanks for clearing this up.
BTW, this graph does not show such a stark difference as one from headroom
DENON AH-D2000
which can be just the result of a different cable.

(a) put toward the stock D5000,
(b) purchase an already APS V3 recabled pair of D2000.

A/b-ing the stock D2000--which I currently own and immensely enjoy--against either option [(a) or (b)] will be of interest to me. For option (a), I would compare the two major tiers within Denon; for (b), I would be evaluating the effects of the APS V3 on the D2000.

What do you all think would be the better first step?

I have compared my APS V2 D2000 vs stock D5000 and the APS V2 D2000 won. The more I listen to them, the more I like them. Lately, when I am too lazy to pull the Edition 9 out of the case, I pick up the D2000. Sadly, I have not heard a V3 D2000, but I have the V3 for my Edition 9, RS-1, HF-1, and 3 APS V3 cables for the HD600 (portable, home and balanced).

APS V3/D2000 "6", D5000 "6", one undecided. : )

In a renegade move, I've thought of buying the W1000 to avoid further indecision, but based on what I've read from those defending the ATH's bass response, I don't think they would unseat the D2000. : )

As I recall... "Markl" suggested the cable on the D5000s was good, and the D5000s probably would not benefit much from the investment in an expensive cable... while... the cable on the D2000s was weak, and would benefit from the upgrade to a better cable. And... that once upgraded the the D2000s sounded similar to the D5000s.

So... once again... it just depends on whether you want the wood cups, or the plastic cups... and whether you think the resale value of the upgraded D2000s would be a strong as the stock D5000s - I didn't think so.

The D5000 stock cable is excellent. I preferred it (on balance) over 3 very popular aftermarket cables. Finally, I found a cable that out-performs the stock cable in every way. I am now offering this cable as part of my service.

This I never said. To my ears these are two very distinct headphones.

Markl,
IYHO, does the cable you found outperform the APS V3? : ) How much for your recable on the D5000?
