Yes the authority on dark metal WSJ has spoken........ha ha

Forgive me fledglings
I failed to alert you that few days ago The End stocked an extremely great and extremely rare item:

Negura Bunget 3CD Box Set
Contains impossible to find first three albums in nice set, sold out immediately unfortunately. I had gotten this set 1-2 years ago by chance from forum tip to call Aquarius Records in San Francisco and sure enough they had one set which I instantly purchased.

The excellent 4th album Negura Bunget-Crugu Bradului is easier to obtain although now sold in jewel case instead of original long box digipak with hemlock sprig from Transylvanian forest (band from Romania)

Well, with the US release of Dimmu Borgir's Stormblåst MMV yesterday, I finally got to hear the re-recording. I must say I'm pretty impressed. While everything has been re-arranged, I feel the sound and production they were shooting for was Enthrone Darkness Triumphant-era Dimmu. It seems like a more aggressive sound than the original Stormblåst, with keys simmilar to Enthrone Darkness Triumphant and lacking the (sometimes overdone, IMO) orchestration of later albums. I'm pleased with their decisions... the re-recording seems to take the best of what they'd done post-Stormblåst and blend it w/ those great songs.

Listening to Chalice - Chronicles of Dysphoria now, this is pretty mellow stuff with strings and soft melodies occasionally rocking a bit, reminds me of Virgin Black or Gathering "planet" mostly. You do get heavy dose of female vocals, but no other extreme male vocal style to offset like Tristania, ToT etc.....Enverxis you are going soft on us man

Not quite as mellow as something like The 3rd and the Mortal though

going soft?

Never! Trail of Tears and more Opera IX up next on the want list.

Children of Bodom's gig in Nosturi, Finland was aired a few days ago in finnish TV. It's already been DivXed and bittorrent file is spreading. It's rather easy to find for those who are interested. *wink*

Got my Stormblast remake today. Mine's a focking dualdisc! Anyone else have that or two discs? I'd rather two. Anyway it went in & out without damage.

Yeah pretty good. I love the semi-stop action film look. As for the daylight issue, it's not apparent with footage of the band straight on, it could be night. It's when they show an angle that reveals a bunch of blue seats, many empty, in the bright light that you know it's day. If I were the editor I'd have stuck strictly to the illusion of night, the stage and the front rows of fans. Why the hell show empty seats? Dumb ass.

It's OK sounding. It's modern sounding, clear, unmuddy, loud/compressed more than needed but not terrible (peak levels 90.0% original, 98.8% remake). Comparing old and new is apples and oranges though given the different artistic renderings. The new one I like well enough when it's playing, the old one I like more so when it's playing. Immediately after listening to the pumped up new one, the old one sounds a little dull at first but I aclimatize to it after a few minutes and like it's sound more. Compare the cymbals hits and imaging of the voice between the two discs for track two, the original CD is really better from a strict sonics realism angle. Again, two different interpretations, apples/oranges maybe. For sure I'd like the new CD better than the old on my long gone warm NAD/PSB stereo.

Still awaiting my Nile Annihilation of the Wicked.

EDIT:I agree with you en480c4 about Dimmu bringing Stormblast forward to join the later releases in having a modern Dimmu sound. I guess the old CD was too much in imitation of other old school bands for their taste now a days.

When is the next new Dimmu release coming out? Or am I getting mixed up and this is the new release?

Dark Symphonies

Good news, Dark Symphonies has lowered price to $8 per CD still with free shipping! Although they have small selection I try to give them as much business as possible, service is fairly fast also for free shipping. They do get many obscure Russian/Eastern Euro CDs that others don't, so I many times take flyers on them and often they turn out very good.

Amorphis - Eclipse

Now I'm surprised. I heard that the band has returned back to their mid-era style and got some new spirit from the change of vocalist, but damn, this album is really good. Might be the first time in years that I'm liking a melodeath album, though this does have a prog edge to it. Stylistically it's quite much like Elegy with Tales-like melodies. Really catchy stuff. Possibly the best Amorphis album since Tales. It sounds fresh, creative and very finnish.

Yo. Whut, you guys have only changed one thread since I've been gone?

On topic: anyone into Canvas Solaris? Really digging this.

PS Nacher -- thanks for the Amorphis news, sounds really good, anticipating.

PS Enverxis -- looks like a nice package -- I have two of those disks, and enjoy them both (the Sirenia and Flowing Tears), and I have another Trail of Tears disk that I enjoy, and am familiar with Artrosis to a small degree -- looks like you and I have somewhat similar tastes (I actually listen to a wide variety of stuff, but my favourite amongst the metal stuff is the ear-candy-ish stuff, especially with female vocals).

What's the consensus on In Flames' last two disks, Soundtrack to your Escape and Come Clarity? I haven't picked 'em up yet.

I was reading through alot of the older threads and I noticed the same
smily_headphones1.gif

By "ear-candy" stuff I take it your referring to the more, hard to describe really isnt it, the more colored/over-produced guitar riffing bands such as Leaves Eyes, Lullacry, Flowing Tears, Lacuna Coil, Edenbridge etc

What do you think of Flowing Tears - Razorbliss ?
Very popular amongst Sonic Cathedral forums, I have Serpentine their prior release with old female vocalist and I think its quite good, didnt find it very involving at first but it grew on me, although yeah Ive heard Razorbliss is more guitar-driven, upbeat, and Helen Vogt (new vocalist) has a deeper more sultry voice?

Same here I have a wide taste and I prefer bands with female or B&B vocals, takes alot to really convince me to listen to a male vocal only band, one band ive been considering trying is Green Carnation

oh Dark Angel if you havent already, I suggest picking up a copy of Catafalque - Unique, i got this quite a while ago, they are a Turkish B&B Gothic style band similar to early Theatre of Tragedy, Tristania but with an 80's twist, actually reminds me ALOT of Aegis except alot faster/rocking and more growls
biggrin.gif
. Female, male clean and male growls. Made my top 10 releases of 2005. Not quite as good but a very awesome debut release!
