I just got this in the mail yesterday, and I have to say I am REALLY impressed. I wasn’t sure what to expect on this one considering how much Solefald’s sound changed between Pills for Ageless Ills and In Harmonia Universali. Once again their style has changed, and in my opinion it is for the better. If I were to compare it to I.H.U., Red for Fire stacks up like this: more melodic, much heavier, better vocals, and MUCH more focused. Overall I would say that this one will easily make it into my top 5 metal albums of the year (unless a few really brilliant albums come out in the next month and a half.)

Brilliant avant-garde BM. Get it if you can find it.

I almost pushed buy button on Solefald "harmonia" a couple times, perhaps now I will just get newest "red"

Nacher is probably the one who should get this, he is more inclined to avant progressive dark metal.......

I will let you know, I have no idea what they are like but they aren't B&B. Just clean female vocals from some Mexican girl that sung on the latest Ayreon album.

Most on Sonic Cathedral Forums rate this as the #1 release of 2005 in Female Vocal Metal

they are on SPV Records.

also I did a bit of googling and the CD can be purchased from CD Universe
and MetalDisc

Listening to Abigor's "Channeling the Quintessence of Satan." Great album IMO - black metal, but very melodic.

also Summoning's "Minas Morgul" and "Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame." I think they have some of the same members as Abigor.

and also Diabolical Masquerade's "Death's Design" For those that do not know, this is Blakkheim from Katatonia's side project band. He worked with Dan Swano on this album, and I guess it is in the avant-garde black metal style, with some acoustic parts/clean vocals. Also very cool, but this album NEEDS gapless, as it is 19 Movements divided into 61 tracks total.

The best Abigor for me are first 4 albums which have recently been released 2 albums for price of one, great deal if you can find them. My favorite single album by Abigor is Nachtymnen which features limited female vocals of Elisabeth Toriser.......here are the 2 album versions to look for:

Nachtymnen/Orkblut
Invoke the Dark Age/Opus IV

There is a Summoning connection, Silenius originally in Abigor left to work on Summoning (Silenius/Protector). Also Abigor member Tharen and Elisabeth Toriser started own group called Dargaard. I do own all work by Summoning and find thier more progressive hypnotic style enjoyable if sometimes a bit repetitive. My favorite album is Minas Morgul, but all similar high quality. After watching LOTR trilogy all the lyrics and song titles make sense now.

Some new CDs have arrived:
Old Mans Child - Vermin
Enslavement of Beauty - Traces of Red
Sear Bliss - The Haunting
Dark Fortress - Tales From Eternal Dusk
Dark Fortress - Profane Genocidal Creations

Flipping channels again last night and FUSE Metal Asylum show had Children of Bodom in studio last night, so in one week had both Opeth & COB in studio, cool (this show much better MTV2 HBB for sure)

OMC - Vermin
Listening to new Old Man's Child album, very strong effort, one of thier very best. Sound quality very good compared to debut album for instance which I suspect is intentionally rawer sounding. Nothing really too different from previous work, just keeps doing it better. This is album #6 and with the excellent results OMC has built strong catalog of work, as well as Galder's recent work in Dimmu Bogir.

Dark Fortress - Tales From Eternal Dusk
Dark Fortress - Profane Genocidal Creations

Both of these turned out very good also, somewhat little known German black metal outfit that plays in the classic norse style of Dimmu, Satyricon, Dissection etc. Worth seeking out, I will keep my eye open for any new work by them.

How did you find them?

Just got :

thyrane-travesty_of_heavenly_essence.jpg

Thyrane - Travesty of Heavenly Essence

The cover art sucks, yes, but by the first listen, this sounds pretty good. Faster and darker than the last album, slightly like Spirit of a Rebellion, but with a heavier sound and more synths.

I do not remember exactly how I learned about Shining, but I purchased "Angst" several months ago (early to mid year) and was very pleased with the music. They are great at constructing a desolate (auditory) landscape and all seem to be very competent musicians; the latter being of import since I was able to listen to the album several times and hear new, interesting parts with each play (hardly a surprising conclusion). Further, the rhythms, e.g. Fields of Faceless, are really involving and go along way to inducing a wonderfully appealing soudscape. So, in light of the above I had to get their recent release, “The Eerie Cold,” which seems to be just as promising. However, from what I gather this might be the last release from Shining.

PS: The first two albums (at least) are being re-released.

Yes great stuff.....except that long section of running through the woods sound effect which I usually skip over.

Dark metal soon to arrive:

Forest of Shadows - Departure
Solefald - Red for Fire
Khold - Krek
Dark Fortress - Stab Wounds
Satarial - Tanz Mit Tod
