I was recently recommended to check out the Dangerous Music Source DAC in a thread I started regarding my search for great DAC w/ integrated headphone amp for sub-$2000:

http://www.head-fi.org/t/647436/better-dac-than-the-anedio-d2-dac-sub-2000-good-with-macs-integrated-headphone-amp-balanced-xlr-outs

Wondering if anyone has heard the Dangerous Music Source DAC before and can provide an feedback?

Per forum member cycler2:

"I recommend that you consider the Dangerous Music "Source."  It has balanced outputs, it's USB async input plays well with Macs, has two excellent headphone outputs (these are fed by a DAC that is separate from the main output DAC), and it's street price at on-line sellers is around $899.  I have had an Anedio D2 in my system and didn't care for it, which opinion I know is at odds with folks on this website whose opinions I respect, but there you have it.  I think the Source's sound is in the same league as the Lynx Hilo, which I used for several weeks, liked very much, and would have bought, but for its $2500 price.  So you can get some context, I have owned and liked a Lavry DA-10 and used a Ben Duncan DaX and a Musical Fideity Tri-Vista Dac.  The Source is a pro monitor controller, so I use it to drive my speakers directly.  It has two analogue inputs and a volume control so it will also function as a line-level preamp.  If you llisten to vinyl, as I do, you can route your phono preamp analogue out through the Source."

I contacted Dangerous Music and they stated its size is 12 3/4" x 8" x 1 5/8"

The Portable Monitor Controller without Audio Compromise.

The Dangerous Source provides the critical link between your ears and the music. Every tracking and mixing decision hinges upon what you hear: how to locate the microphone’s sweet spot for the perfect vocal, where to place the panning to define each instrument’s space, creating the perfect marriage of kick and bass in the track…

  1. Portable or Rack Installable (kit optional)
  2. 2 Speaker Outputs- Can Be Engaged Simultaneously
  3. Headphones Can Monitor Single or Multiple Sources
  4. 2 Analog Inputs: 1/8" Mini Stereo & XLR/TRS Combo Jack
  5. 2 Onboard Stereo 24-bit/192kHz D/A Converters
  6. 2 Digital Inputs: AES/SPDIF and USB
  7. USB IN, up to 24-bit/192kHz for Windows and Mac
Plug in two pairs of headphones and get inspired with a Dangerous caliber headphone amp.

Select any of the four sources individually or at the same time- plug your iPod into AN2 and jam along in AN1.

Listen to any combination of sources from either section.  For example, let the singer hear their own personal headphone mix from the AN2 input, while you engineer the real mix, coming from the USB input.

There’s even a line level control room output, mirroring the speaker selector for dubbing, sampling or running external meters.

Switch between two sets of speakers... or use one output for a subwoofer... or play them both at once to blow up the neighborhood.

Built for life on the road, slide the Source into your backpack and hit the streets.

I misspoke in my original reply when I said, "two excellent headphone outputs (these are fed by a DAC that is separate from the main output DAC)"  It's the USB and SPDIF inputs that have independent DACs, not the headphone amplifier.  Sorry about that. Take a look at this for a useful professional review:  http://www.tapeop.com/reviews/gear/91/source-monitor-controller/

No worries, Rich.  Thanks again for bringing Dangerous Music to my attention.

I'd have to say the BMC PureDac is most stoking my attention right now.  Would love to be able to sample the DM Source though.  Not sure how deep a vendor network they have in SoCal...

Like no interest in this DAC. Seems interesting and packed full of features for that price.

and a newer review i found the link for on DM's twitter:

so odd that there's tons of industry support for Dangerous Music yet they're kinda phantoms around head-fi.  probably because they don't make dedicated headphone amps.

check out all these DM music industry affiliations:

Very interested. Will you be using it just for the dac/controller or the headphone amp too?

I'm set with the M51 (waiting for the Schiit statement DAC), but I am curious to hear how the DM compares to the field.

The east side since about 1986. Looking at a dac upgrade, but the source looks like an awesome quasi-portable unit.

I think this would be a fantastic tool for the 'semi-pro' reviewers on Head-Fi - even though its generally accepted that switching back and forth between phones isnt a good idea in terms of getting a solid impression of the differences, we all do it  ;)
