Baha, that is too funny, to associate those two, or even mention them in the same sentence.

Here is a little story related to this topic...
I was on a blind date with a girl two weekends ago at a small sushi place. They had some music playing in the background which as a usual ice breaker you talk about what is playing etc, and a Norah Jones song came on...

She says: "Do you like Norah Jones."
I did not hear her at first and she repeated...
Which I reply: "Oh Norah Jones, no don't really listen to that."
She replies:"You're probably like Norah who?"
I say: "No I've heard of her but am not really familiar with her songs, so I don't recognize it, but it's popular with people I know"

Ok so after that I dropped the subject of explaining any further of what I listen to and how much I like music really since...
1. Did not want to get into explaining the different types of music I am into which she might not really know what the hell I'm talking about anyways or think what on earth do you listen to.
2. Didn't want getting into about the headphone system which would probably bore her to tears, and don't even want to get into how much is invested in music in general since it would probably scare some people (friends already think it's crazy).

So sometimes you really just have to let it go.

If she considers Norah Jones possibly obscure then yeah, it was probably a good idea to drop it

I was tempted to tell that ############ to go and #### elsewhere. Nasty, tricksy memberses Should just refer him to the instructions.

But then I thought to turn another cheek ...

I wish I had more musically weird people around me -- most of my friends listen to pretty pedestrian stuff.

Some years ago, I had a friend from Canada who played interesting stuff in her car -- an elegant if dissonant tango for strings and piano, evolving into a popish beat. I thought "hey, that's neat" and asked her what it was -- and this was the way I learned of a French act called NLC, or Nouvelles Lectures Cosmopolites. I borrowed that CD and made a cassette out of it (that was way before the days of CD-R or MP3; even MD was not popular), and eventually brought the CD when I found it.

Unfortunately, nothing else I got from this one-man act was as good as that CD Unis -- NLC seems to specialise in pointless sampler fluff.

Not quite on-topic but not quite off-topic I love wearing my Shellac tshirt to motorsport events, maybe 5% of them will know the band and about 40% the gasket sealant

But yeah I listen to mostly alternative indie and electronica, but not that far off-field and regularly get it classified as totally obscure stuff...

Heh. Try telling someone sometime that you listen to video game music and check out the look on their face.

Of course, this isn't the only thing I listen to, but the only group I can say out loud and not have people look confused usually is Radiohead.

Well hardly anyone in my school has heard of Radiohead, let alone bands like Sigur Ros... Most Hong Kong people only listen to Cantopop, maybe also a lot for Japanese Pop, but very little people do listen to bands like Radiohead. I once played Radiohead's I Might Be Wrong EP to a girl who listens to Celine Dion all the time and she said she felt bored after hearing the low-fi intro of that song. I guess my music taste is quite different from them. :O

My music selection is too ordinary

I feel like saying 'Dammit! My music isn't weird!' too, but for the opposite reason

Very few people I have met like my music or even heard of any of the groups I listen to. I only have met one other person who has heard of Project Pitchfork, for example. I often have my music categorized as "satanic". What? Just because it has a German singer, distorted vocals, and/or an otherwise non-poppy sound they think it is satanic. I find a lot of my music do to its faster rythm is rather motivating. I don't listen to the radio so I don't recognize nearly all music that is commonly played, and people think it is weird when they ask if I have heard this or that's newest album and I ask who they are talking about. I listen to stuff that appeals to me, unlike most people who like something because their friends like it or it is played on the radio.

i'm sort of the opposite. i get accused by the music snobs i associate with of listening to too much "poppy" type mainstream sounding music. i mean i dig on the weird as much as the next guy but sometimes i just want a careless, sing-along to the hook, cheer me up, kind of song by a fake plasticky corporation-manufactured "musician".

I can relate to that. Really depends on my mood. Plastic pop is like watching Ricki Lake or Temptation Island, sometimes I just need to listen to it to cheer me up.

Heh, practically everyone I've been friends with from high school 9 years ago to now are Radiohead fans...just by chance. It's not as if I purposely sought out these guys. Meanwhile mention any Japanese soundtrack and I'll get blank stares and a sudden change in conversation. C'est la vie.

Dude (and I use that in the purely expletive sense),
Everyone is looking for a way to stand out from the crowd;
To be perceived as something left of ordinary, special and unique;
This is just their way of telling you that you've succeeded.
When they say "weird", hear "unique", and I guarantee that it will stop bothering you.
Don't deny it, revel in it.
