Howdy
So I can either get a good deal on a dac I know little about due to unpublishable reviews (m stage dac) or just use the d12 which has a nice dac. Also I have a d2 boa kickin around which I will either sell or maybe use as a preamp? How would this do as a preamp?

What poweramp are you going to use the D2 with? AFAIK headphone amps aren't the same as speaker amps; they're all technically integrated amps already, not separate pre- and power-amps, with the exception of such amps as the AudioGD Phoenix, but even that is a single system anyway. Which means hooking up the D12 as a DAC to feed the D2 to be used as preamp then into the M-Stage would be using two potentiometers in the signal chain. That's the kind of thing you'd want to avoid since gains structure can get complicated.
