0.5mW output!!!

At first I thought that was a typo, but after reading all the posts I realized it wasn't. Wow, that's not much power at all, I'm pretty surprised that the volume cap is that low.

It's interesting they've seemingly capped power on portables but haven't gone after headphones on the sensitivity. I'm surprised they haven't limited that as well since that's the other part of the equation.

Great, no wonder it couldn't drive anything but 888 when I tried it.
Sony really did it this time. Next generation might well dispose of the headout whatsoever

and achieve a battery life of 10000 hours. Who cares if the sound quality is good or bad if you can only effectively drive a couple of models of earbuds.

Rotfl. I suppose sooner or later owning a D-100 without license will get you arrested. Any idea how that limit is implemented? Can't be that difficult to get rid of. I guess the service manual would tell...

At this rate the best selling earphones will be the one with the highest sensitivity and efficiency

Imagine what kind of headphone sound quality will be the product of such market conditions

Probably by using an op-amp that only goes up to 0.5mw?

There's no sense in using anything more powerful if you're not going to be allowed to use it

They haven't capped the power, but the maximum SPL:
Les baladeurs musicaux vendus sur le marché français ne peuvent excéder une puissance sonore maximale de sortie correspondant à une pression acoustique de 100 décibels S.P.L.
So I wonder why manufacturers don't just deliver the players with less sensitive headphones in France. You could just throw them away and use real phones...

But it's worth shipping different players?

Sure. If you design players so that they can be locked to different output levels easily in firmware, then it's not a big deal. However it's not as easy to do the same thing with phones, is it?

AFAIK you guys receive supraaural phones with most players in the US right? Here in HK we always get earbuds.

The ER-4P's are rated at 107 dB @ 1 mW. Add the isolation factor, and these Etys will work with almost any weedy portable audio device, like this anemic D-EJ2000. However, these canal phones are very revealing, and you'd hear the many shortcomings of the headphone amp circuitry.
