Arrived at this conclusion at first until I tested both of them today again. The Zune had more soundstage and was airier though it sounded dry/thin sounding with my EH350. The ZVM had less soundstage, was a bit more subdued but had impact. It sounded fuller to my ears despite it being more 2 dimensional.

I preferred the ZVM. Of course, what the better sounding player is subjective. It really does depend on one's sonical preferences.

@ lutwey, if you want the X5 on top of your zune, just forget about it. Apparently the battery life is nearly the same (not the X5L, which is more $$$), and they're beginning to discontinue the X5 line.

yeah, but the x5 should sound better than the zune. it also acts as a ums so ican use it to any computer without any software, which means i can have my entire library anywhere(20 gigs is more than enough). not to mention that it has the recording feature. i mean, how much does a decent 1gig recorder cost....around 120 usd. with a decent mic, ican record lectures.

despite all that i'm not sure if i'm really going top keep it. if it blows my zune out of the water, then yeah. if not i'm returning it for something else probably another d2 for my sister.

One of the things I like about the iriver products is you can find them refurbed on ebay for around one-third the original msrp.

I say to just wait for the X7. It's most likely they'll improve the screen as well.

exactly. there's no need to improve on a product that's good already.. i'm sure that people bought the x5 for audio, not for video. if one wanted video they wouldn't have bought it.. a more vibrant screen would just eat up battery life

just got the x5............sounds pretty sweet. cant wait for the d2.
i'm sorry zune and ipod owners, cowon's superior sq is not just a fad.
it's real.

i love the built of the player as well, just loaded the songs w/o problems too.
the only thing i don't like is the "color sound" label. What does it suppose to mean???? colored sound???

it's all subjective. everyone says something different depending on their preferences. You hear a million people saying a million different things about the sound quality of these players. The only one that seems to be somewhat reliable is the dislike for ipod sound. I don't hear many people saying "Ipod sounds awesome!" but you hear plenty of people saying zune, cowon, zvm, etc sound the best! I take it with a grain of salt. The best thing to do is to go listen to all of them because it depends on the person more than anything in my opinion.

i just received them so i cant back up my statement yet as much as i would love to.
but let me tell you something that im sure with, zune is as good as this at best. i'm telling you, the power of the hp jack is like any other...........it can adequately drive my 580s. no need for an amp if ur using this one. but with jet effects.......its really a runaway for the iaudio. i ll do the through comparison during the weekend......too busy with school.

Jeteffects.... :/. I liked them at first to for about 8 months, then I grew tired of them, now I hate them and without it the Iaudio is just like any other dap.

The D2 even sounds better without the JetEffects...the only thing I use is the EQ and the mach3bass...
You'll love the D2's sound...and the output power really opens up headphones that are fairly hard to drive...and makes the ones that aren't hard to drive sound better...
