cowon x5 and d2 vs zune

I'd say virtually anything has better battery life than the zune. That being said, the zune case is absolutely GOLDEN. It feels so reliable and sturdy, like a block of rubber. Just by holding it, you know that it is a very durable build. The zune was the only player that gave me the "WOW" when I first used it, my sig shows what I've used before.
Good luck with your purchase, I haven't used Cowons yet.
I'm curious to see how they weigh up against zunes.

I've never owned a X5...but I had a Zune for a few days....Right now I have 4 Cowon's all flash players and I love the D2..that player is awesome...

Personally I think the Zune is in a different class than the D2 because of the Zune's humongous size...But comparing the Zune to the D2 the Zune is like an old crippled dinosaur...the sound quality on the D2 is much better...the video quality on the D2 is much better...And no software needed to load music on the D2...and the D2 has loads of power...it's just an all around totally awesome player...

The specs of the D2 look very good I must admit. But the screen is a bit too small for my liking, plus it doesn't have enough memory. If you're serious about watching videos on it, I'd advise you to go to a store and compare! When I was shopping for my player, I compared the ZVM with the Zune. I really liked the ZVM, but the size of the screen was just a tad too small to enjoy for me. So I went for the Zune instead. But for me even the 30Gb is really it bit too cramped!

If video isn't a big deal, and the 4G (expandable to 12G) is enough for you, the D2 looks like a pretty neat player...

pretty sure 16gb sd cards are either about to hit the market, or are already out. 32 gb cards to follow in months after. I'd think about buying the 16gb once the 32gb's are out, because the price of the 16gb will drop alot at that time.

*the above mentions of sd cards, all refer to sd-hc cards. Just realized this after i typed it.

Any basis behind that statement? I did a little H120/X5/Zune comparison and I honestly thought the Zune came out on top in SQ, especially with IEM. Overall better dynamics and a much blacker background with sensitive IEM. Were you amping either? What cans? Was it the same source material? Perhaps I was all placebo'd?

The X5 sounds pretty good...as long as you don't mind the sucked out mids. The weak mids on the X5 drove me nuts even with liberal use of the equalizer. I have the Zune right now, and I have no complaints with regard to its sound quality.

I don't think the mids from the X5 are sucked out at all, and the X5 extends more with better control at its farthest ends (i.e. synth bass and hi-hats). Concurrently, timbre is more perceptible on instruments do to this extension.

It's a small difference, but I wasn't as impressed with the Zune's high end.

Never tried the X5, but I know that the ZVM sounds muddy, booming and piercing in contrast with the zune (based on A900s). The clarity is even better on the Zune than through the sb live on my computer, aside from the loudness.

Actually, I think you're proving my point. It's not that the farthest ends are more extended. They're just boosted. As I've commented on other threads about the X5, the X5's sound signature seems to have a natural V-shape. With this rock-eq type sound signature, the mids sound much more attenuated than the bass and treble, which is why I said that the X5 has sucked out mids.
