$270 for the 32GB is a very good price, thanks for the link
i already have a galaxy note for anything else other than music but my brother sometimes use the ipod for video playback so i want something that is capable of playing different video formats (both players can do this i guess)
i read reviews about the z2, my main problem would be that it gets hot (real hot) and with the weather here exceeding 40c this won't be good experience at all, the other thing is to find a way to make the volume buttons able to change tracks.

i have similar concerns with the z2 myself but the 64gb sd expansion makes it a good deal....the sonys are quite tmepting now if i can stream lossless from my pc but the memory sucks.

I just came to this thread looking for some orientation between cowon and sony; well since I had a cowon J3, I wanted to try the sony nwz a865 and kind of wait for some reviews of the Sony F series in order to get it in the near future.

So I bought the Sony NWZ A865 and After a week of using the A series I am now sending it back, and I will be getting the Cowon Z2  even that the Cowon J3 is still available in amazon, I will go for more video support on the Z2.  The sound in the Sony is good,  very clear and detailed, the battery life though was very poor compared to my previous pmp, also I did not like the lack of SQ  compared to Cowon J3, which can boost the bass way more than the sony sony just offers 3 levels of Clear bass which was just not as good as Cowon, the SQ in cowon is far superior than Sony and that I think is the main reason of getting a Cowon.

So in conclusion this battle was won by cowon for my taste though... Sony is still a very good pmp but I will try the Cowon Z2 hopefully for a longer time.

Just be aware, the Z2 doesn't have the battery life of the J3.....it's closer to the Sony you just sent back.

That is correct, I know is just 22hrs, the sony A865 has also around the same battery life "in theory" perhaps for the cold weather here, but I never passed 9 - 10 hrs with Sony.
I listened mainly 320kbs and some wav albums, battery life is important but I can live with 20 hrs.

cheers for that info though

Not better luck with the Z2.
The sound and the video are just great, I would say the sound for my taste that is better than the sony A-865, the video way superior since is capable of 1080p, I only watched 720p movies though.   The battery life also better than the Sony Walkman, no much but definitely better.
The control buttons are not very easy to use, I prefer Sony A865 and better yet the Cowon J3.

Well but not everything is perfect, Cowon Z2 is a very weak android phone, very poor wi-fi connection, many times while downloading an app from the Goggle play Market (which I installed easily following the instruction also given in head-fi)  the connection went down, I could installed some app. like Powe-ramp which works better than the default player which does not even show the proper cover albums, I did have the latest firmware, but the problem still persists.
When running apps. the Z2 crashed several times even with very basic app. like Brightness Level.
The blue-tooth would fail during transferring files.

Summarizing, the sound and video are very good, but for an Android device my actual basic Samsung Galaxy Gio S5660 performs much better than the Z2, even when I use Poweramp in my phone there is not much difference between them, cowon Z2 is still better but is very subtle difference, I realized that using my Android phone I get very similar sound, however, the battery would drain quite quickly since I need the volume almost at the max level with my ATH-m50, but I just charge it a bit more often.   I believe there is no point in expending the money in a Cowon Z2 when does not perform as It should (as an android device) so I sent it back; and for now I will just use my Galaxy Gio with Power-amp until a pmp like Cowon J3 but improved (more video support and better blue-tooth) could be released in the market.    I think Cowon J3 was the pmp to have (great audio support and battery life), hopefully cowon could put in the market a new model following that line, then I would consider again getting a Pmp,  however how things are moving, my next pmp could be just a new Android Phone with a great battery life, nice screen like Amoled and that should be enough, I read that Sharp is releasing a new Phone (Sharp AQUOS PHONE SH-07D) with a great battery life for music and a Wolfson dac like Cowon (there are others phones with Wolfson Dac and Yamaha but without a great battery), still it seems very expensive but that could be the way.
For now I will wait for a while to see what happens in the market.

If volume is the problem then wouldn't using a portable amp like the FiiO E5 portable amp solve that and help with battery life and improve SQ?

I didn't think about it...
Yes I suppose, that would increase the battery life.  I will have a look at that Fiio E5.  Cheaper solution for the moment.
Thanks for that

I've not used one myself, often consider picking one up. I'm also finding my Android phone decent enough that I'd consider leaving the MP3 player behind, and as I'm at a desk most of the day (Grrrr) battery life isn't an issue for me.

In my opinion something like Fiio E5 will degrade the already very clean signal of Cowon Z2 decreasing sound quality. You're putting a $20 budget amp between an already very capable $270 piece of equipment. In my experience with Fiio E5 it would be a waste of time even if it be only for extended battery life. I think if you were try it, you would switch back pretty quickly. Not to mention the E5 only gets about 15 hours battery life anyway.

Actually the idea of using the Fiio E5 was not for the cowon Z2 (which by the way, was sent back) but for a Samsung Galaxy Gio which would increase its battery life.
when using Power-amp at almost maximum volume (needed to drive properly my ATH-m50) the battery lasts just like 2 hours.  So 15hrs of battery life with the Fiio E5 would be quite good to use it with that Android Phone.
Thanks for the extra info though.

I thought it was a phone, I didn't realise it was an MP3 player. Maybe better headphones then?

You're absolutely right about it being a phone in question, Possibly an E5 will help the situation though usually if the sources output is already low an amp like E5 won't give much boost. It really needs a signal at decent volume imo. E5 was ok for me when I was mucking around in my earlier days, though I left it behind pretty quickly. I think if the person in question wants to boost those M50 with the phone he maybe better off looking at E11 instead.
