I'm looking for a pair of neutral closed-back headphones for classical and jazz. They must be a good match for my Audio-gd SA-31SE for critical listening at home, but also perform well OTG (hotel room and aircraft, not walking around outdoors!) on the end of my HM-650 / Minibox card or HM-601LE with various portable amps, both solid-state and hybrid.
My current favourite open cans are the HD600 for classical, and the HE-500 for jazz.
So far, I have bought and tried various closed cans, with mixed results. None is fully satisfactory (except, perhaps, the DT-48E):
- Beyerdynamic DT48e (25 ohms) - my current go-to closed can. Excellent, transparent and detailed midrange. However, bass and extreme treble are rolled off, and there is little in the way of a soundstage. These are cans which sound like cans (albeit very good ones)! I will definitely be holding on to these, as they are classics!
- Beyerdynamic DT250-250 - good midrange, but excessive bass and rolled-off treble. Transients and dynamics sound blunted and soft. Pleasant and inoffensive, but unexciting. Plus, they only really give of their best on the end of an OTL valve amp (impractical for travelling).
- Audio Technica ATH-A900X (A1000 pads) - brilliant soundstage and dynamics, powerful, controlled bass, but veiled midrange. Transparency and detail are lacking.
- Fischer Audio FA-002w (5-step beechwood cups) - the best sounding, but they have a "cuppy" midrange colouration and are bulky and fragile. Isolation is practically non-existent.
- Beyerdynamic T51p - the best pure portable cans, but bass is somewhat wayward and dominant, and difficult to get under control. This dominates the listening experience, and spoils it.
- Sennheiser HD25 II - detailed and dynamic, but also closed-in and boxy-sounding. Not particularly enjoyable.
The best closed cans I have heard so far (although they were WAY over budget), have been the Fostex TH900 (heard at a show here in Shanghai). Even then, they didn't isolate particularly well.
So far, I am considering:
- Focal Spirit One Professional (the current favourite)
- Focal Spirit One Classic
- Beyerdynamic DT150
- B&O Beoplay H6
I know I should really like the DT1350, but I have heard them on two occasions out of my portable rig, and found them to have an unpleasant, tinny midrange colouration. Midrange detail and accuracy is all-important.
Street price should be below GBP 200 (which applies to all of the above). Any suggestions?
