COMPARISON / REVIEW (Part Deux) : A tale of two Sennheisers – HD600 vs HD650
Jun 12, 2015 at 9:54 AM Post #136 of 207
What is the more relaxing as treble reproductions between both ? i read from some users feedbacks to be the HD650, but the difference is noticeable ?

The darker sound of 650 is so noticeable ? bass is much more powerfull than 600 ? Big difference here or slight ?

They're not too different. Sometimes it's impossible to even tell them apart. Get whichever one and be done with it. Alternating thoughts between these two headphones have been the biggest waste of my time ever. All you need to know is the HD650 has a little more bass and softer treble, but most people still prefer the HD600 for its more even response. Not a big difference. More obvious on certain tracks, not all. But never a sharp difference between the two. This is really all one needs to know about them, but many of us have spent innumerable hours on useless research.

After nearly 10 years of a HD-600 I was looking forward to a 2nd hand HD-650.

I had both loved and hated my 600s. I had always found they needed to be EQed - a 2dB cut at 125Hz.

The graphs comparing the 600 and 650 showed a broad shelf some 2dB lower between 125Hz and 1kHz on the 600s. Perhaps this shelf was manifesting itself as the bass peak I heard and hated?

The differences in the treble graphs between the 600 and 650 troubled me too, what if I hated the so-called "darker" sound of the 650?!

But I was already committed, so it was too late to bale out.

My thoughts on the bass were well founded. The 600s bass shelf WAS the contributor to the bass peak I was hearing and hated.

Finally, a headphone I could listen to without searching for an EQ.

On the treble side there was a difference it was like whether I'd woken up on the left or right side of my bed. Both were different yet the same to my ears. I wasn't fazed.

Listening to rock, jazz, medieval, orchestra, solo piano or Top 40 hits, I'm glad I swapped my 600s for the 650s. Yes they cost a little more, but they ARE the more accurate pair.

To me they are, anyway!

Hey Brooko,

Your review on the HD600's is what pushed me to buy a pair back in 2012. I still own that same pair after all this time. Many headphones have come & gone in my collection but these will stay.

Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for the awesome review!

My pleasure and thanks for the kind sentiments. I've bought and sold my HD600s twice - now on my third pair. I've resigned myself now to the fact that it's pointless selling them as I'd only repurchase another pair later. They will remain my mainstay for headphones - and many times I continue to reach for them rather than the T1s. Truly a world class transducer.

My 10 year old HD-580's sound VERY much like my 2 month old HD-650's.
The only dramatic difference so far between the two Senn's, is the stronger clamping force on the new HD650's.
I am curious if any "burn-in" will change the sound of the HD-650? Time will tell!!

Leaning toward the cheaper HD600s to pair with my Benchmark DAC2 HGC. Would you say the HD600 will get me 95% 'there' in terms of sound quality?
I'm coming from a Beyer DT990 600ohm and find it too " bright" with my DAC2.

The Benchmark should be pretty transparent, and its hard to comment on how the HD600 will sound to you. All I can say is that despite having the T1 - I still often reach for the HD600 simply because of its natural tonalioty and timbre.  I think it would be a nice contrast to your DT990 :)

Thanks for the great review and to everyone here for the contribution. I've read almost everything. I'm still hesitating between those two though. Which one would you recommend with a combo Schiit Modi 2 (maybe Uber) + Vali 2?

I mainly listen to electronic music. IDM, ambient, drone, noise, techno, house, etc.

I thought the HD650 would sound better with electronic music. But after reading this thread, i'm not so sure anymore.

Thank you for the help!

You can't really go wrong with either.  If you prefer a little deeper bass - then go with the HD650.  Differences with the new models won't be huge though.

I've owned a pair of 580's since the 1990s.  I had considered the 600s, but from what I had read at the time, there was a qualitative difference (small), but mostly it was how they looked.  Years ago a picked up a pair of the metal grilles from Senheisser for $6 each and replaced the plastic.  The sound changes slightly, and they looked more stylish.

My take on the 580/600/650 line is that they are all solid contenders and vary a bit but so long as you like what you're hearing, any is good.

I've since replaced all the foam.  The headband completely deflated and earpieces flattened about 50% after 15 years.  But otherwise, these are going strong.  What I loooove about these cans is they are serviceable.  Anything goes bad, and there's a part you can get.  But outside of the foams, I've been lucky to enjoy them for nearly 20 years.
