I'd agree with this 100%. I prefer the 497s to the Grado SR60.

Don't mean to crap on this idea, but I have some reservations about posting such a list and if it is posted I think it should lean toward the inclusive end. We spend so much time debating the merits of the 497s vs the Grado SR60 or the PX100 vs. the PortaPro that I think it would be misleading to imply an endorsement of one over the other.

you should never endorse one headphone over another to those whos tastes you know nothing about.. instead you should describe the merits of each fone and say to whom's listening style they would most suit.

Like I said, the AKG K271 Studios should be up there somewhere. They're in about the same price range as the Beyer DT 250-80s and and they sound great for the price. Plus, they're closed so they offer some isolation. They are my primary gaming phones.

to love.. yes.. they block 18 decibels

and why isn't the music series from alessandro-products.com up there? and youd best be putting th dt 880's up. and hfi 650 should be in the closed can also.

This is getting picky but, in spite of what the Headroom web site says, I find that the Senn 497s do just fine without an amp, and actually can be driven by some low powered portables that can't handle the Grado SR60.

My 1.5 cents

Metron, this doesn't make sense to me, can you clarify? I assume you are talking about the Etys, but ...

First, please show me instances of a general consensus recommnending MS phones. AFAIK, reactions to the MS series are mixed. I am happy to be corrected if I am wrong, but again, please remember this thread is about COMMONLY RECOMMENDED HEADPHONES. I have rarely seen the Alessandros recommend. not never, just rarely. Most of the time, standard Grados are recommended over the Music Series. But please, correct me if i am wrong.

Again, this thread doesnt exist to represent every headphone that people use. only those that are recommended time in and time out.

I have added the 650s, based on people's suggestions and my own research thereafter.

I will add the DT880s.

thanks for your input. I'm not sure it's relevant here, but your info on the 497s is good to hear. perhaps you can include that in the potential thread that lists impressions/minireviews of individual headphones, categorized by brand: the Sennheiser Phones thread, Sony phones thread, etc.... so again, thanks!!

if you put the grado's you're best off putting the alessandro's and the reason more people don't have them is that they don't know about them.. at least put them in an alternatives category or something... they are very much worthy of mention.. and that thing to love was saying that the dt 770's block out 18 decibels and they are closed cans.

Can everyone live with the list provided a few posts up?

I think I added most suggestions. Of course everyone's recommendations are welcome and appreciated. However, I really stuck with those that are commonly occuring and recommended by more than one person time and time again.

Thanks for all of your help.

Actually, I was just responding to the words "(no amp)" following the SR60s in the list. I thought that if the SR60s were being recommended for unamped use that then the 497s should be also. But since there are many phones on the list that would also fit that description, perhaps the "no amp" should be removed from the SR60 entry.

Some more comments:

Senn 497 should be deleted from the "closed" category and the Senn PX200 should be added.

The Senn 280Pro should definitely be added to the "Isolating" category, since it's generally considered the best conventional form factor (not in-ear, no active noise cancellation) option in this regard.

The Senn PX100 and PX200 and the Koss KSC-50 and Portapro should be added to the "Portables" category.

How about a "Cheap (<$20)" category, which could include the Senn MX500, the Koss KSC-50 and (new entry) the Philips HP170? I think this question comes up on a regular basis from noobs.
