I know in another thread you mentioned that you originally tried the 414 pads over the stock pads but the sound was too muddy. You could try cutting a hole in the stock pads and then putting the unmodded 414 pads over them. This would leave the highs unaffected but add distance between the driver and your ear.

Koss UR40's.... had those. The highs were very sharp and harsh, couldnt really stand them for that long of a time. As for isolation, its a completely open headphone, it will lets tons in and tons out.

I got those, without the Coby brand, in a local shop for around 8.00 dollars. I ended up using the headband, which I think is great by the way, as a substitute for the worn out headband on my MS-1's. The fit is almost perfect, but you have to drill the MS-1 cups a bit so the pointy things on the new headband fit in the hole. I like the way they look now and the cable is no longer stressed or twisted, so I don't have to resolver it or fix it as often as I did before, ussually every two or three months. And now, my MS-1's are colapsable and they fit neatly in a leatherette bag included with the cheap cans. Maybe the headband will fit another set of headphones and be used as a substitute.

Yes you cut a hole in them...same as with a Grado, just a smaller hole.

My old portaPro's with reversed HD414 pads:

And in response to the non-Coby version...apparenly Coby or not, the going price is $8!

Ya I made the mistake of subscribing to CARGO about a year ago. Seemed like a deal for $10. Didn't realize it was just [Male] Cosmo. Terrible rag. Not something I would resubscribe to.

What the new cups will look like, though I want the grille more flush to the cup.

Well I got tired of trying to get the mesh flush with the opening. So I decided on something else. I was re-clothing on one of the speaker grilles in my car, so I decided to do the same for my headphones. I did glue in the mesh to keep the grille cloth from getting punctured. I also sanded the outside of the cup to make it more abrasive, to keep the cloth from moving too easily. I actually like the way it looks. Kind of retro.

On a side note I broke the magnets out of the "High Performance 40mm Samarium Cobalt Magnet Drivers" and used them for 'fridge magnets, since they are rather strong. They hold paper to metal much better than they reproduce sound.

Yeah they look much cooler now with the speaker cloth. I also love the use of the word "rancid" to describe the sound of the originals.

interesting thread. i picked up the coby with the exact same intention few months ago. been too busy and never got around to doing it, and i now i end up using these as my "on the go" cans, along with my ksc75. turns out i found them quite comfy and they provide just the right amount of isolation for work.

that said, i may PM you about a DIY guide in the future

There are some great quotes in this thread. I'm impressed with the mesh enclosure. I really like the looks of it. It almost looks stock. Great job!
