I own the M50 and the D1001 and have listened to the Shure 840. If you're a basshead go with the M50. If you prefer a more balanced sound go with the Shure. I also think the Shure is slightly better overall. I prefer a more balanced sound sig of the SRH840 as I feel the bass on the ATH-M50 is a bit much for me personally. But either one is a solid 'phone for the $$.

can't really go wrong with the m50 or 840.  It's a win-win situation :)

Actually, I suppose I am a bit of a basshead so that means I'm pretty much settled on the m50 now. Thanks for letting me know about that though, definitely could have been a purchase-changer otherwise.

I appreciate all the help. Ordering M50's from ebay tonight, can't wait!

Cannot believe no one has said Beyer 770.  I can use the 250 ohm without my amp and still get enough power or yoou could get the 80.  Read the reviews-everyone has or has had it.  They are solid and you should be able to get 1 here or on ebay in great shape. I luuuucked out and got a pair for 40 bucks.

I didn't really care too much for my DT770s though others like them. I found the bass to be somewhat overpowering and boomy and the mids too recessed for my music listening. That being said I think they do an excellent job as a movie and gaming can as they have a great soundstage for closed cans and the bass really helps with explosions. Just my take.

My recommendations would be for the M50 or 840 in this range. Baka stated my thoughts almost exactly in his post.
