I've been using and have loved my Sony MDR v900's. I bought them when they first came out several years ago for about 280, now I'm ready to move up. The MDRs still work, and I bought some HD555's but I can't do the open headphones, in loud places you can't hear them well and in quiet places people complain. So I've decided to get some new closed headphones. I'm open to any brand and my price range is about 300 like last time.  I will be gaming and listening to music.. if that helps.

You can check the ATH-A700's. 
They have a nice soundstage, despite they are closed hp's.

Both Laptop and desktop, no amp, don't want to lug one around with me, though I might build one for home use.. that would be down the road a bit.  As for music, trance mostly for listening while playing UT.  Price limit ~300

Check out the Denon D2K's, I listen to pretty much everything and play UT3 through mine and they sound great.
