OK, I'm upping the budget for closed, over-ear, good isolation, primo SQ phones.  The T70 and the w1000x seem like contenders (and each is available for around $550).  Thoughts? Opinions?  Others I am overlooking?   Thanks!

By most accounts, the Denons all have very poor isolation, and the hd-25 is not even full-size, so it will not isolate either.

My short list seems to have come down to: Beyer T70 ($550), AT w1000x ($550), Sony MDR-Z1000 ($400), Shure SRH940 ($270), and Phiaton PS500 ($300).

Driving them with a Bellari HA540 amp.  Will be used for both acoustic jazz and electric rock.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks!

Yeah, I forgot the Senn wasn't full sized. You can cross the Shure off the list, tried in a store, couldn't even isolate the 2 people talking in the store quietly. The Beyers by reviews seem to be quite good on isolate but they're all quite expensive for portable headphones.

Measurements suggest they isolate at -12dBr, a slightly above average number. To say they don't isolate at all is a lie.

Jordan8, I went with the Denon D5000 ($440 at Eletronics Expo).  I know everybody warned me that they do not isolate well, and everybody was right!  No better isolation than my open Beyer DT880.  Very punchy and fun sounding, a very different flavor for me.  Bass is plentiful but loose.  I may keep them, not sure yet.
