I know that Beethoven's 9th by Fricksay was used by Stanley Kubrick (I think in the shining?).
No, Clockwork Orange.

Sounds awesome, I'll be sure to check it out.
Mahler #2 by Solti/London from 1964 is also astounding. Solti's early Mahler (1960s) with LSO are much better than his later stuff with the Chicago.
Wonderful playing and sound.

Shosta's SQ no.4 - music to lose yourself with. I've been coming back to the 4th time and time again these days.
Picked up the Pacifica Quartet (recommended by @RRod in the best classical thread) and Beethoven Quartet's complete box sets a while back. The former is excellent, and also includes works of Russian contemporaries as well which provides context to the the string quartets.
I'm still working my way through, but I'm not completely in love with the Beethoven Quartet's set - maybe the sound quality - their opening movement of the 4th seem too rushed (like the Fitzwillian version) - and certain phrasings sound a bit clumsy and awkward - it could be I'm too used to the Borodin version. Nevertheless I'm continuing to familiarise myself them.

I have the Borodin set 1-13. Haven't even started them yet. Will try #4.

Listened to No.2 today. Wonderful!

There's a plethora of Rach 2 & 3 recordings. From what I've heard, these 2 are amongst the most musical and engaging:
Vladimir Krainev in no 2:
Evgeny Mogilevsky in no. 3 (with long cadenza):

I wish Carlos Kleiber had recorded Beethoven's 9th symphony.
