Chord Hugo - The PORTABLE discussion thread
Jul 27, 2015 at 5:21 AM Post #1,591 of 1,858
the HD800 has always been a divisive headphone, there has been plenty of debate in the Hugo thread and you can safely assume that punters are 50-50 split on liking/disliking the headphone pairing... if you waltz around Head-Fi you will find plenty of threads where powerful 'desktop' amps just do not cut it with HD800 so it is just not a perceived problem with the 'portable' Hugo.

another thing I find confusing this being the 'portable' thread is just who would wear the HD800 or the like (LCD-3 etc.) out & about?, perhaps I should make it my mission in life to 'find Wally' in the crowd wearing HD800's that said, the thought of wading through a myriad of multi-coloured Beats searching for the holy-grail fills me with dread, to quote Col. Kurtz 'the horror... the horror'.

at the end of the day you can't make a juicy gammon steak out of a sow's ear, some headphones with pair better with the Hugo than others and that will all be down to personal taste and the sound you're after.

Well I am an HD800 owner following this thread carefully.  I don't propose to walk around wearing the HD800s but I would like to listen to music in different places in my house -- at my desk, in the sun room, in bed at night, in the garden -- and I would like to take them with me when working away from home on assignments for a week or two at a time.  So portability matters to me and is a big plus making me save up for the Hugo.  I could just go for Senny's own HDVD 800 amp but then I would be anchored.

Re "walking around" -- for my part I do not understand why anyone would get exercised about hi-fi quality while riding public transport or walking down the street.  Surely there is so much noise pollution in those circumstances that searching for quality at the level discussed in this thread would be pointless?

Do enjoy everyone's posts.  Thanks guys.

can't argue with your post and heartily agree with your second paragraph... I use IEM's at reasonably high levels when out & about to block out the noise and I'm not really bothered about SQ as I'm more interested in staying alive... nothing like a chance meeting with Death when a car scares the living excrement out of you, man those heart-stopping moments are such an adrenalin rush...

Can you elaborate? I would've thought that Hugo + V8 might work out great because of V8's bass-heavy nature. (Then again, I thought the same thing about TH-900.) Depends what you're looking for, I guess.
Has anyone tried Hugo + Vision Ears V6, by chance? I'm about to pull the trigger on that CIEM, but was actually trying to get hold of a 1964 V8 (or Noble 8) to listen to first.

It was really the pairing for me. Hugo + V8 sounded really off for me. Though they were good with the ak240 and sony zx2.

What i realized with this hobby is that different equipment and combinations offer a different experience for each session, and for each person. Me, i just plug in what i feel i want and listen to the music. Sometimes, i'm aha, this sounds great and i have to remember this combo. sometimes, it was a waste of effort setting up the chain.

I don't get bothered much with eq or other technicalities, i just go with what i want. if you can try it first, all the better.

Lastly, even though the hugo doesn't match well with the v8 and fx-1200, no regrets with the hugo. After not using the hugo for 1 mo, when i listened to it again with the layla, it was wow time again and i remembered why i couldn't part with it.

Anyone that understands the Bluetooth hardware/software. Does connecting to the Chord via Bluetooth for Spotify extreme have any loss of quality?

Since Spotify is (AAC) not some heavy format does it all get transferred no problem? As good as an On The Go cable?

I ordered a new iPhone 6 but the Apple store no longer supplies the camera connection kit.  Instead there is a lightning-microUSB adapter.  Is this okay to use with the Hugo?

Thanks

Whereas I feel the opposite, I would hate to be removed from this mortal coil with a scowl on my face, having issues with audio quality whilst the number 45 bus is bearing down on me...

heard that No.45 route took in the 'murder mile', is that part of your journey?... we have Arriva buses locally which are actually quite accomodating, the driver lowers the step for me to get on and then I have free wifi & charging on offer, I can hear you jealousy thinking 'cor blimey geezer that's pretty nifty' but in truth it's a non-entity, time you got your wifi sorted and usb plugged-in it's time to get off the bus... gotta love the useful daily things that improve our mortal existence...

Yes, the bottom end (well, actually the whole sound) fills out, but Moreso the bass, yes... As much as it pains me to say this, the Hugo can definitely sound bass light / clinical at times, and the Duo fills in the gaps... The only downside to that is having a triple stack makes you look like a terrorist when you get it out on the train to change tracks, with a big stack of largish boxes with wires hanging out all over the place!

Glad I'm not the only one who finds the Hugo a tad bass-lite, do you get more bass if you use it as a DAC with an external amp?

Definetly, I have mine paired with a Fostex HP-V1 hybrid portable amp. Gives that color I want from the Hugo.
