One annoyance though: all my Hi-Rez music (24/88.2 24/96 & 24/192) will play back either 44.1 or 48 according to the color code on the device. I wonder why is that?

I think the Verge writer has no idea what he's talking about. 5.5 out of 10 for the H2 is just patently ridiculous. In my one year as an 'audiophile', I've learned to take reviews with massive servings of salt, especially those from mainstream tech publications like the Verge, anything on ASR (frequency response is not the whole picture, and 98% of the members have no science/engineering background as far as I can tell), and any 'reviews' on r/headphones or other reddit forums I don't even read except for comedic value.
Enjoy your Hugo 2, I can't wait to get mine. I picked up a used one, fingers crossed everything is as they say in terms of the device's condition. I know I'm going to love the sound because Mojo 2 has been a revelation.

That was such a random review for a mainstream publication. I wonder why they did it, whether it was Chord that reached out to them or an amateur audiophile on the team that thought it would be cool to review.
They should have just stuck with the Mojo and not gone any further. Seeing how scarcely they review high-end audio gear shows that they don't have the experience to advise in Hugo 2 territory. For those knowledgeable on the matter, it makes them look bad. But most of their readers aren't knowledgeable in this and it unfortunately makes Chord look bad.
Don't bother!
All it does, it keeps the light from volume control to get mixed up with button lights.
If you really, really want to do something about it. Take the old one out, use it as a template to cut a new one from a piece of plastic film, that does not let light through.
Or use tape to hold the existing one in place.
You would be golden.
