Chord Electronics - Hugo 2 - The Official Thread

Really?! I need to get my ears tested again 😮. I found it more engaging and warmth with the mojo. Do you feel a huge difference or is it very sutil? I do feel the Hugo has more soundstage and is a bit more neutral, but is really really close, not like the big difference we perceive with non-electrostatic headphones.

I agree with you. Mojo KSE1200 warmer, more engaging. Hugo 2 more detailed, more neutral, little bigger soundstage. I'd have to say the difference is rather subtle. I notice that I can listen to the mojo/KSE longer than the H2/KSE combo. On the other hand, with the Empyreans and Clears the difference is not subtle.

Just out of curiosity, how does it compare the H2/Empyreans or Clears vs Mojo/KSE?
I listened to them in a hifi show but didn’t have the KSEs to compare right away.

I bought a Digital Coaxial cable from Chord to use in the Coax In socket of the Hugo 2. It doesn't fit, and on checking the manual the jack in the graphic looks totally different, it's described as 3.5mm Digi coax and the jack is almost headphone shaped.
Have I made a schoolboy error here, apart from not checking the manual first!!!?? What coaxial cable should I have bought?
Below is a link to the one I did buy

It is not a 3.5mm Coax cable and it is not described as such anywhere in the link you posted. If you scroll to the bottom there is a picture of a 3.5mm Digital Cable under the heading "You Might Also Be Interested In"
The Chord Cable Co and Chord Electronics are not related in any way.

Thanks for reply. The manual I was referring to was the Hugo 2 manual, it shows the 3.5mm jack. Sorry I should have made that clearer.
So what I need is this one below then, with the termination at the other end being a normal RCA?

I always (naively)assumed that all coaxial digital cables were RCA to RCA!
The Hugo2 input is a space saving equivalent of either 2x RCA type or 2 xBNC Digital inputs in order to provide the bandwidth for 768kHz from the MScaler.
In which case you would need a cable like this
The specific cable you require will depend on whatever you wish to connect to your Hugo2, but make sure it has the correct poles connected of the four at the Hugo2 end. I am sure will find some suitable options by searching this thread.

Thanks for reply.

I want to connect it to a Cambridge Audio Azur 851N Network player.

From my obviously limited knowledge of cables I'm guessing that the Atlas coaxial cable with 3.5mm jack at one end going into the Hugo 2, and RCA jack at the other end going in to the 851N Network player will suffice?

An optical cable would be my choice for that device. This will avoid any potential groundloop or RFI noise.

Cheers,

The reason I favoured Coaxial over optical was this note in the manual for the 851N

Note: Although TOSLINK connections on the 851N work up to 192kHz with high quality cables, TOSLINK is not usually recommended with sampling rates above 96kHz.

Yes, it will.

As for optical, the Hugo 2 is quite happy to do 192k here. I'm using this excellent optical cable:

I do definitely agree that the Mojo+KSE is a more pleasant listen. It's an excellent pairing. I guess the difference in what you gain with the H2 is subjective. I most definitely hear a greater amount of detail with the H2+KSE. Not massive, true, but certainly notable. Often when I'm listening to the H2+KSE, certain passages make me pause and just be like, Wow. The H2 also adds more soundstage, where the KSE could use it. The imaging capabilities of the KSE also shine through with the H2. Before I got the H2, didn't know the KSE was so good with imaging.

Cheers, I'll do some shopping around and have a think of whether to go Optical or Coaxial

I will say that I went optical and I am happy I did. It really takes care of the RFI, it's guaranteed to be clean. And how often to you play music above 192kHz? You know the answer to that.

I use this: chord.co.uk/product/c-lite-digital-optical-audio-interconnect/

Cheers I'll check that one out. Coincidentally that cable is the optical version of the coaxial cable I have!!

Or this one I would recommend; https://www.amazon.co.uk/KabelDirek...8401&sprefix=kabeldirekt+op&sr=8-3&th=1&psc=1

And go optical is my advice, if the Cambridge has optical/toslink out which i assume it has
