Hello everyone, I just purchased a Hugo 2 from a headfier, i Have not gotten it yet... Does anyone know how the hugo 2 with an SE100 source would compare to the likes of an SP1000 or 2000? Any comments would be welcome.

Its a digital connection so there would be no difference. For example my Shanling M0 sounds exactly the same as my Cayin N6ii when used as a USB transport with the H2.

Thanks for that. So then as a standalone unit, how would the H2 compare to the 1000 or 2000 A&K,?

The SP1000 has a very good dac. I paired my H2 with the SP1000 but always went back to the SP1000 dac. I also got MQA (if that's to your liking) with the SP1000 dac but not the full decode when using the H2.

Ok. Im not interested in features, just pure sound. I read somewhere the H2 and sp1000 were comparable...(I think)...

The SP1000 vs some other source and H2. Tie for sound. Loss of features.

H2 outperforms 1000 literally in everything: soundstage, high frequency resolution and separation, dynamics, mid range resolution, low frequency speed. 1000 looks like a kid stuff compared to H2.

2000 is basically very close by the overall sound level to H2, but I'd still prefer Chord. 2000, while having rather close technical level, has a less deep soundstage, slightly less natural instruments positioning. 2000 has boosted lower frequencies (not slightly lol) and colored mid range. Cube and 2000 are basically the only 2 daps, that can compete with H2 in higher frequency resolution and separation. Rest are way worse.

You just made my day, thank you for that!

One more question: This is new territory for me... How will the H2 fare driving overear headphones, say like the Arya, or even a Diana Phi? Does it have the juice, or is a separate desktop amp better?

Sp100 or 200 is an oversampling system that really is like apples to chords orange. Oversampling really smooths out or adds warmth imo compared to h2. It comes down to preference. I tested it on its own, not as a source

Hugo 2 has enough power for pretty much anything and adding a separate amp only serves to reduce transparency, moving you further away from the source and potentially introducing distortion. Some enjoy that, but Rob Watts, the designer, recommends against it.

Hope this helps

I've been using it with MrSpeakers Ether C Flow, that are one of the toughest closed-back oems to power. And H2 easily handles it. Now I'm using this combo with a tube amp Wa8, but only for the tube warmness n stuff.
