Genre's are so difficult to pin down sometimes. So I'll tell you the artists whose style I'm looking for and the setting in which I hope to listen to them and hope you guys can suggest some new stuff for me. Trip-hop maybe the actual genre...

I picked up an almost completely instrumental album by Clutchy Hopkins titled "Walking Backwards" that I love. Check out tracks 1, 2, 4 for some examples.

Not quite as consistent is an album by the artist Nobody titled "Soulmates." The particular track I like is "For Those Who Never Dream." Again, it's a mostly instrumental album.

"Mysterons" by Portishead is yet another.

Basically, I want something I can turn the lights down low, pop a Valium or an occasional Vicodin, friends can enjoy some smoke and we all sit back and relax. Essentially looking for music that is nothing depressing and certainly nothing exuberant.

I appreciate the suggestions!

Definitely check out Boards of Canada and Ugress. Right up your alley.

Helios is really nice too but may be a bit too ambient for you.

Tonepoem is also very awesome.

CHECK DEM OUT~

Albums:

Infinity Project - Mystical Experiences
Various Artists - Bioluminescence (a complilation from Native State Records)
Various Artists - Fahrenheit Project Part 2 (Ultimae records complilation)
Massive Attack - Mezzanine (perhaps too obvious, but you didn't mention it)
Lichens - The Psychic Nature of Being
Lamp of the Universe - Earth, Spirit and Sky (though anything by him would do)
Various Artists - Psychedelic Chilling Volume 2
Kruder & Dorfmeister - DJ Kicks
Mystican Sun - Deeperworlds
Nightmares on Wax - Carboot Soul, Smokers Delight (also obvious)
Bluetech - Prima Materia
Bonobo - Animal Magic (or Dial "M" for Monkey)

Many obvious ones, but it'll do for now.

trip-hop is boring IMO. Look for IDM artists. Way more engaging and often a lot more expressive.

* Boards of Canada as mentioned above. Look for "Music has the right to children" and "Geogaddi".
* Plaid, "Spokes" is great. The sound track to "Tekkon Kinkreet" is really nice too.
* The Tuss, "Rushup Edge".
* AFX, the "Analord" series and "Hangable Auto Bulb"
* Chris Clark or "Clark", The album "Clarence Park" is nice.
* Bola..

If you play my library (in my sig), you'll hear many of them but it'll be mixed in with some other genres.

Some excellent compilations:

Hed Kandi's Winter Chill series is top notch.

Cafe del Mar is great.

DJ River has some nice (and free) stuff here.

The nice thing about compilations is that you get to hear and discover a variety of new or obscure artists that you can then hunt down.

Trouble with chill is that many of the artists seem to only be in compilations, which can be frustrating.

Good Hunting!!!
