I've been scoping the japanese headphone-fi sites...and i came across a new amp called the "CEC HD-51" I think the maker of my favorite CD transports is going the headphone route now. This is very good news

Just to let you know I saw this today for 31,000 yen (about $260) in Akihabara. Yamagiwa / Ishimaru to be exact. It's a really pretty unit. Top notch construction.

I'm probably going to get one. It's about half the going price for a x-cans 2 and even cheaper than an obh-11. There were only a pair of mainstream headphones attached, some cheap sonys and a pair of cheap audio technicas, so I didn't do a real audition.

The specs are a little vague. It's supposed to be class A and rated to to 8 watts. But there's no ventilation whatsoever. So I figure only one of the internal amps is class A, and only for a few milliamps, good enough for headphones I suppose.

I haven't heard CEC Headphone amp, but had read so many posts on Japanese headphone forum. It was said
"very good"
"not bad"
"< Corda HA-1"
"Very good construction!"
"noisy (with low impedance headphones"
"no noise (with HD600)"
etc.

It's quite natural that each opinion varis so much. Reading this could not give you certain truth. But as far as I see it is clear

" The sound is not bad"
"However still it is a sound from $300 Amp."
"At least the first lot had noise issue."
(Be careful!)
"CEC made mistake of bandled cable, so the right sound comes from left, vice versa. But it"s just a matter of cable."

I came very very close to buying a CEC transport when I was considering keeping the Perpetual Technologies DAC.

For me, it's exciting to see a big company making a headphone amp even if it sucks. Unfortunately if no one buys it because it's not a quality product, it sets a bad example for other big companies. ("Didn't CEC make on of those last year and then stop because they weren't selling?")

Anyway, if anyone gets one, please do post your review. I bet it is at least as good as the Grado RA-1.

Shorton,

The symbol used for ohms is the capitol Greek letter omega, Ù . The translator or program just took the symbol and spelled it out into the English equivalent.

Doesn't sound like it: 380mW is not that much power. And that is at 32 ohms.
