When looking for prices on the NAD S500, I found the Stanton S500 CD player instead. it's a 'pro' unit, lots of strange fiddly controls you'd never find in consumer CDPs, and goes for cheap. Are these 'pro' CD players any good at just plain making music?

Since this thread was resurrected ...

A Cary 303/200 and a Cary 308. Both very nice players. You could do a lot worse. Some folk prefer the Meridian, but I'll let them speak for themselves.

I was seriously considering the Marantz SA-14 for both its Redbook and its SACD performance, until I read that SACD may be about to die. Now I think I'd be better off getting my vinyl rig fixed and running.
