Apologies if this has already been covered in a different thread but I had no luck finding any answers through the search engine.

I'm wondering if there's any head-fiers out there who might have had a chance to hear the pairing of a K1000 with the Cayin HA-1 and how they found the results.
I'm not sure if the Cayin puts out enough power for the K1000s.

Yes, it does work. Ferbose brought his Cayin to the LA meet. We did some A/B listening with another amp and I thought the Cayin was pretty good. I'd like to spend more time with one.

Should the K1000 be connected to the speaker output or the headphone output of the Cayin?

You know, I don't remember how Ferbose connected the K-1000 to his Cayin. Though it would probably make more sense to put the K-1000 on the speaker taps, since they're supposed to run off of them. I ran my K-1000 from the back of a Conrad-Johnson amp and just switched it over to the speaker taps on the Si2A3.

Looks like its connected at the headphone out..

This doesn't really surprise me. The speaker outs on the Cayin aren't very good..!

As in the quality of materials used in the speaker taps or the sound quality of the output via speakers is poor?

It sounded very underpowered when I tried it with a cheap set of speakers...

Were the speakers efficient enough for such an amp?

I'm not sure but the speakers were tiny so I assumed it should have been alright. BTW, here's someone else who prefers the headphone out for the K1000

The speakers I'm guessing were more than likely a low-impedance (4 ohms), low efficiency set. Small, sealed enclosure sets are by nature in-efficient. The Cayin with its small output needs at least an 8 ohms (16 ohms preferable, and of a very high efficiency rating). A vented, horn type loading would be perfect. Even then, the Cayin is really meant to be used at back-ground listening levels with just a few watts per channel available. Perhaps some older JBL, Bozak, or Klipsch speakers would be in order!

Are you sure? That looks like a K701 plug to me.

Maybe... but... AKG techs suggest a speaker amp with a minimum of 30 watts into 8 ohms is the minimum required to drive the K-1000s to their potential.

Why mess around with anything less than what AKG recommends? Why invest so much in ear speakers (what the K-1000s are), only to underpower them?

You misunderstood.
30W into 8 ohms requires 15V voltage swing.
But you never know if your speaker amp can deliver 15V voltage swing into a 120 ohm load (actually K1000's impedance goes to something like 300 ohms).
On the other hand, Cayin HA-1A can reliably deliver >1W into a 120 ohm load or even a 300 ohm load, which is exactly what K1000 needs.

K1000 can be driven by both speaker posts and headphone jack on HA-1A--they sound different. I like to the headphone jack these days.
