Emailed Schiit Audio and got a reply from Jason himself, statement amp will run $1200 to $1500. The $750 one will be mid tier.

Should be out by Q1 2012, but there is no guarantee.

Hey guys,

We're trying not to announce any more details until the amps are available, but I can confirm the following:

1. The prices stated above are at least in the ballpark. We have to finalize the BOM before we can set final prices, so don't be surprised if it changes.

2. Both balanced amps will indeed use the same topology.

I probably won't be able to answer many more questions, I'm afraid.

All the best,
Jason

On page 21 or so there is a nice discussion of this recent trend of "exorbitant" prices for recent high-end gear. When people compare the price of an older generation of $350 high-end headphones with the current one at $1500, there is no mention of all the inflation in the 10/15 years between the generations and the fact that this stuff does not benefit from cheap labor in China. Add in the low volume sales these products have, the limited distribution etc.Not that I disagree that bling sells, and it is sad to watch this trend progress. Hell, even venerable B&W is selling expensive toys of brushed aluminun and stitched (not sure) leather in every Apple Store. They even changed the logo, from classic "B&W" to the pompous "Bowers & Wilkins".
By the way, nice article on Wired about B&O: http://www.wired.com/magazine/2011/09/ff_bando/

I went to a lot of the audio rooms and priced a lot of stuff. One of my favorite systems would cost 400K. Nordost had a power cable that sells for 13K, and somewhere there was some speaker cables that are 30K. $1945 for LCD3's sounds like a huge bargain in comparison.

I would like to add that Jason and Mike have been in the high end market previously.  They have made a decision to provide value to the market.  How many companies put out a statement amp at $1k?  From what I know of the capabilities of the Statement amp this will be fantastic value.  Wait until yo are able to compare the Dark Star to the Schiit offering....then determine value or maximum profits....

And cheaper Schiit means more left for a poor mans 009's...the LCD3!  Well hopefully.

I listened to the Dark Star and the HE6's. That was the best I have ever heard on the HE6's. Then I switched to the LCD2's with the Dark Star. That is the worst I have ever heard the on the LCD2's. It sounded way too dark.

Ray should have named it the "Bright yet Neutral Star" ;O)

I don't think the LCD-2 responds well to excess power. I love the HE-6 out of my speaker amp but not so much the LCD-2 which I really like out of the WA22 (with the right tubes). Personally I didn't care for the LCD-2 out of the Lyr either, but I did think the Lyr was great with K701s.

Hi Vince...I would agree that the HE-6s respond to more power than the LCD-2s, but I still find the LCD-2s (being orthos) are far from Grado's with respect to power. They still respond to more juice. Pop in the 6080 tubes in your WA22 and listen to what you hear.

FWIW, I find the Lyr/LCD-2 a very good clean combination and better than many $1000 amps I've heard them with. That said, I prefer my WA22 (with the 7236 or 5998 tubes) as well.

That's a good point, that there are limits to everything. The LCD-2 does like power but still doesn't need that much compared to the HiFiMANs or AKGs. I used to drive the LCD-2 and the HD800 at the same time out of the WA22 and found that they both improved being driven one at a time.
