Speaking of flashbacks...
CanJam 2014 @ RMAF, An Audio360.org Show Report (Part I of II)
Wednesday, December 17th, 2014
by Audio360.org Staff
As we ascended to CanJam 2014, those of us who made the pilgrimage last year thought of only one thing: we should pull out all the stops, and eclipse our exhausting (if not exhaustive) CanJam coverage from last year. We had covered approximately 75% of the show last year... perhaps this would be the year we hit 100%?
Well, that didn't happen.
In addition to covering CanJam for Audio360.org, Michael Mercer would also be contributing a behind-the-scenes look to EnjoyTheMusic.com, helmed by our dear friend Mr. Steven Rochlin. Frank Iacone was there with several members of the Headphone.Guru crew, covering the show for Headphone.Guru (for the most part). Ethan Opolion wasn't able to stay all three days - but even if he did, he would still have been overwhelmed as this was his first CanJam. Scot Hull and Brian Hunter were there of course, but they have TheAudioTraveler.com and AudioHead to tend to. Michael Liang, as many of you know, is on hiatus now that he's with Woo Audio. And Warren Chi? Turns out Warren was officially part of Team CanJam this year, and working the show the entire time, which left him little time to actually attend CanJam, much less cover it. And just like that, our mission to bring you the most comprehensive CanJam coverage ever collapsed under the brutal weight of reality.
But then, something wonderful happened! Miraculously, and unexpectedly, this fantastic community of audio journalists - of which we are proud to be a part - came to the rescue.
In the days that followed the close of CanJam 2014, show reports started to flow in. It was a trickle at first, then a steady stream, then a deluge, from every direction. Some publications leaned towards the cursory side, while others produced a breadth and width of coverage that will long be the envy of many. But together, everyone made sure that CanJam was not ignored, and that few stones (if any) remained unturned.
It was humbling, and touching, to see.
And so, we came to the decision that the first thing we should do this year is to celebrate and pay homage to our brethren. To honor them, to see that their hard work gets all the visibility that it deserves, and in the spirit of giving this holiday season... we hearby begin our CanJam 2014 coverage with a survey of the community's brilliant efforts.
Brian Hunter, owner and principal at Audio-Head.com (and fellow Audio360er), continues to blaze a brilliant trail through every show he attends.
Mr. Anthony Kershaw and his team at Audiophilia have always embraced everything that brings music and great sound to people. As always, we enjoyed his coverage!
Michael Lavorga always makes sure that we don't miss a beat in the world of digital audio. Check out his coverage for the Pulse, LIO and some Sony gear at CanJam 2014.
It's always fun hanging out with Steve "The Audiophiliac" Guttenberg, and doing so at CanJam this year was certainly no exception. Be sure to check out his picks for standout gear, as well as his gallery.
With the possible exception of our friend Jude Mansilla at Head-Fi.org, John Darko has logged more flight hours than anyone else, as he straddled the globe covering every audio show known to man. Fresh from the NY Audio Show in late September, he joined us at CanJam 2014 ready to rock!

Mr. Steven Rochlin (affectionately known around Audio360 as "the one and only Mr. Steven Rochlin") served up some of the best CanJam coverage we've seen yet. Not only did he set up a full broadcast studio for RMAF exhibitors, but he (along with Scott and Harmony Hicks) took an extended video tour of CanJam. Add to that a very personal and behind-the-scenes look by our very own Michael Mercer, and you pretty much have the most vicarious - if not the most visceral - CanJam coverage to date.
Our Audio360 brother, at sister site Headphone Guru, joins in the celebration of CanJam 2014 with his 16-part photo essay. He even caught some candid shots of us Audio360 and Guru writers. Gee, thanks Frank, lol!
Chris Martens, one of our very favorite audio writers anywhere. His coverage of CanJam 2014 was both deep and insightful - we highly encourage you to check it out!
We don't think you'll have any problems guessing, but check out what Jim Clements considers the "biggest growth area in the high end" and which "trend is impossible to ignore."
If there were an award for Best CanJam Coverage of 2014, we'd have to award that to Mr. Tyll Hertsens of InnerFidelity. This is especially true when you consider that: (a) he maintained timely and daily Facebook updates during the show; (b) he was essentially just one man with an iPhone; and (c) the listing below represents only a portion of his coverage, due to the fact that his iPhone munged an entire day's worth of video. Still, he managed to put up the following, which we find fairly remarkable.
Our dearest friends and family at Positive Feedback came through with some wonderfully intimate CanJam and RMAF coverage. If there was such a thing as a backstage/photojournalistic look at the show, this would certainly be it.
Want to know what a master of multi-channel ecstasy thinks of simple stereo headphones? Check out Thomas Norton's insights over at Sound and Vision. You might be surprised to find out what was possibly the best sound he heard at the show.
Fellow Southern Californian (many of us in Audio360 are), and headphone reviewer/measurer extraordinaire, Brent Butterworth made the pilgrimage to CanJam. Don't miss his survey of the show, which include some noteworthy products that others might have overlooked.
The incomparable Jason Victor Serinus wasn't on CanJam duty this year, as Tyll had things well in hand. But still, he couldn't help but stop in for a peek or two over the course of the show... and we can certainly understand that.
Certainly one of our favorite audio writers around these parts, Steven Stone shared his insight on what he felt was the most important trend in high-end audio these days - and we agree.
And last but by no means least, check out Dennis Davis's CanJam coverage, focusing on some of the very best products making their debut this year.
Of course, we have our own contributions to pile on the heap as well - including a world exclusive or two. Stay tuned for Part II, where we'll be doing just that.
