Can DT880s be fully driven with an high-end portable amp?

I'm entertaining an offer of barely used 2006(?) (most likely the 250ohm version) DT880s for $175+S&H on another forum. Judging from the DT880 sales in FS forum this seems to be a good deal that shouldn't be passed up and I plan to buy a RSA Mustang and ALO Jumbo Cryo x Silver or Cryo SXC 18G down the line.

The original plan was to buy Westone 3s, then the portable amp and interconnect but chances are I can haggle it down a little bit more at this rate.

Use the 880s quite happily with the Mustang and now using the Cryo SXC 18g with my nano. Quite happy and quite nice combination No problems with the Mustang driving the 880s either. And mine are the 250 ohm version

My 2003 DT-880 sounded excellent using my Pico. I've used other Meier and HeadRoom portable amps also which worked great.

Just don't plan to feed them low bit rate compressed music or you will be disappointed.

Yes, you'll be in good shape using your dt880 with eg. Xin Reference, P51 Mustang,Xin Supermacro LE, and probably Pico - a rather diverse spread of voicings. Most likely the Reference would work best in this instance. Once upon a time I had dt880 and found I could happily use them with the Xin of the moment (just remembered it was a Supermacro LE [w/Ad8616/8656]). I was also surprised how that amp also ran a pair of dt880/600 ohms I got a bit later.

At one time I ran my DT880's with a Practical Device XM5. Sounded good to me.

I didn't like the DT880 with the HeadSix or CMoy. It sounds alright, but you don't get anywhere near the potential of the headphone. I think the DT880 is at it's best with vacuum tubes; solid state can make it sound thin and brittle, especially when it's not getting enough power.

^ agreed. Even something like Millet hybrid would really make them sing. Although I have heard Dt880 with some of Dr. Meier's home amps and I thought that was a very good match.

The DT-880's (I have the 2003-250 ohm version) are very nice headphones. I use mine with a Meier Opera and love the sound. I have used them with a Headroom Total Airhead and the TTVJ portable millet hybrid. They sound OK with the Airhead, and very nice with the TTVJ portable millet hybrid, and while they sound good (especially with the TTVJ amp), neither portable amp compares with the sound out of the Opera. I think these headphones need a good desktop amp.

I agree as well. I have DT990's 2005,250ohm)and It's all my Nuforce Icon Mbile, Travagans Colors, Fiio E-3 can do to get them up to a normal volume.
There are some many fine H/P's out there with low impedence which would be better for portable use.

As far as the Solid State vs Tube amps, I cannot say as I have never had a tube amp. I hear they are generaly considered much "Warmer" than Solid State. and are considered better for high impedence H/P's
